OECD broadband penetration rises to 18.8%
    Published: Tuesday 6 November 2007

The number of broadband subscribers in OECD countries rose to 221 million in June, up 24 percent from 178 million a year earlier. Penetration improved to 18.8 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants from 15.1 a year ago. Denmark, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Korea and Norway and Iceland lead the OECD in broadband penetration, each with over 29 subscribers per 100 inhabitants, while the US is the largest market in terms of total subscribers, at 66.2 million. The average monthly price for broadband service in the OECD was USD 49 per month, while the average advertised speed was 13.7 Mbps. In 20 of the 30 OECD countries, broadband services were subject to monthly data volume caps. The average was a limit of 21 GB per month, after which ISPs most often cut the speed, to an average 82 Kbps. Alongside the figures, the OECD announced that it is starting a broadband statistics portal, which will contain new information from November. This includes broadband prices, advertised broadband speeds, household broadband usage, the number of households with a home computer and the number of businesses with broadband connections and company websites.
