    Hi all,
    I moved to Galway two months ago. I'm a unix admin who will be on call one weekend in every five. Because of this, I require a broadband connection at home. I'm currently renting a house with a few others and there's no phone line. We do have NTL digital so I was thinking of just getting the NTL broadband package as it's a lot less hassle than getting in a phone line and waiting to get DSL with Eircom.

    I'm not really worried about the cost of broadband as my company are paying for it, but I would like your opinions on this. Can I rely on NTL for broadband, or would I be better off just going with Eircom? If NTL is rubbish, can you recommend a better alternative? My landlord isn't too keen on putting an antenna on the roof for wireless broadband.

    Thanks,
    pid().

    Will you be using a VPN to access work? if so i've never had a problem with NTL. I'm in dublin btw.

    If you plan on downloading torrents or playing lots of games online you may have some issues with their service.

    Yep I'll be using a VPN to access work.

    Thanks for all your advice guys, I'll give NTL a shout now. :)

    Can't get NTL Broadband in my area, despite having NTL digital. Grr! Argh! :(

    We've a phone line in the house now so I guess I'll have to get Eircom 3meg and be raped by the cost of it. Does anyone have any other provider suggestions? I was with ESAT before but the modem was rubbish and kept rebooting itself. Not going near them again.

    I thought your company was paying for the BB, if you can get Smart, go for it, but I would guess more likley then not that you cannot get Smart.

    They are paying the rental, I'm paying the installation fee. No smart in this area either. Digiweb say minimum of 20 working days before I get it installed. :( Magnet are charging 55 quid a month for 3 meg... no thanks. Might have to settle for eircom.

    Actually I was wrong, Smart are in this area but they want me to change over the phone to them in order to get broadband with them - that's a no go.

    EDIT: Going to give irish broadband a call in relation to their 3meg dsl service.

    Ahh I was just about to sugest Irish Broadband. Was looking at their site earlier for a next door neighbour so if I remember correctly they've no download cap and you don't need to change the phone line over. It's user installed too so there's no installation fee. Win win!

    Erm, other than that I've heard good things about smart but don't go near Perlico! My dad had Perlico there a while ago and it was diabolical! The modem was carp, and his speeds for a simple 1Mb line were just touching dial up. His phone line is well capable of full speed DSL tho and he now has a 3Mb line.

    Cheers for the advice mate. Ordered Irish Broadband 3 meg dsl - no cap and no install fee. Should have it all set up by friday week. Happy days. Pity I'm on call this weekend though - I'll have to go to work at 4.30am but I can live with that. :)
