After checking cartell.ie to see if a number was free, I phoned the Revenue to reserve the number. Spoke to a woman on Monday who after 30 seconds of bumbling, told me the number was gone. Today, I decided to chance it again, and lo and behold, the number is free, or rather was free, it's mine now! Strange though, you think they'd love to get their mits on 315 Euro!

Well, my Ducati has 999 on the plate, and I wanted the same for the car (Different year obviously), but it was gone. So I tried 111, 222, etc, and as luck would have it 888 is free. I'm still waiting for a confirmation phone call from Rosslare, but the guy on the phone said there should be no problem.

Anyone care to explain how, if at all, this works for used imported car (ie not current year) registrations? I presume you can do it, but must wait till the reg is reached naturally before putting it on the car. Which isnt too likely when you are registering a 04 car in 08.

Yes well generally that is the case, however I believe they are now reserving certain numbers each month, and also desireable numbers in case owners look for them in the future !

Reserving reg numbers is a nice little earner for Revenue. I'm surprised they don't make the public more aware of this service.

I suspect that it has something to do with civil servants being unable to cope with having to work!

So, after waiting and waiting and waiting for the confirmation call, I decided to phone them instead. "I applied for 0XC888 earlier, just checking that the application is okay, and I can forward a cheque?", "Shrgrand". How the country doesn't fall apart is beyond me.

a friend of mine just got a 993, and he asked, half jokingly - if that year's '911' number was available.

Yep, it was. Been on the books, sitting there, for 12 years !! No one bothered to ask, apparently !! So, now you know there's probably a whole bunch of others just sitting there

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
