My uncle was a goalkeeper for St Pats about 20 years ago.He wouldn't watch the EL now. He'd be more into The Premiership, international football and golf.Theres something wrong when an ex player doesn't follow the league he used to be involved in.

I never had one bit of interest in it.The only time I saw these teams playing was in the Carlsberg trophy when Liverpool,Leeds and Lazio played here in 1998 in Lansdowne and in 2003 when Aston Villa and Leeds came over.

ONYD has been infracted as he didn't seem to be getting the message. Now please leave the Eircom League clubs out of this and get back on topic.

the message being questions from non-members of your sporting/political group are to be ignored?

If this thread and some of the people on it are reflective of the attitudes and ability in the Gah, I honestly despair. Unlike some of your fellow travellers, I have no problem with you playing your sports. So long as you don't interfere with my club like you are and I dont have to pay your players, like it appears I may have to.

I'm sure someone will get around to my question about what is stopping other agencies/individuals giving players 'grants'. But I won't hold my breath.

Other agencies/institutions are giving players grants and have been for quite some time. In DCU alone, these are the players getting elite sports scholarships,
    Gaelic Football Men’s
Ronan Flanagan, Sean Johnston, Michael Lyng, Dermot Sheridan, Brian Coleman, Barry Watters and Ray Cullivan (Cavan), Declan Walsh and Marlin Mc Elhinny (Donegal), Michael Savage, Phillip Brogan, Paddy Andrews, Kevin Leahy, Chris Guckin and Kevin Nolan (Dublin), Greg Rogan and David Reilly (Galway), Max Bradley (Kildare), Craig Rodgers, Conor Merdith, Brian Smith, Colm Munnelly and Simon Shorthall (Laois), Denis McGoldrick and Pauric Gill (Longford), Paddy Keenan (Louth), Conor Mortimer and Alan Joyce (Mayo), Brian O’Reilly, Kevin Reilly, Shane O’Rourke, Padraig Howard, Brian Sheridan, Alan Nestor, Shane Carr, Rory McGuire and David Donegan (All Meath), Darrach Mooney, Dick Clerkin, Ciaran Hanratty, Shane Smith, Kieran Hughes, Danial McNally, Mark McDevitt, Neil McAdam, Brian McArdle, Mark McNally, Martin McElroy and Darren Bishop (All Monaghan), William Mullhal (Offaly), David Keenan, Cathal Cregg, Stephen Ormsby and Niall Carthy (Roscommon), Brendan Egan and David Kelly (Sligo), Shane Roche (Wexford) and Ciaran Walsh and Paddy Byrne (Wicklow).

And that's a college with less than 10,000 students. Add the likes of UL, UCD, UCC etc on to that and you'll see a lot of players being treated quite well. I know of one player who was given a free car, others who have jobs offered to them left, right and centre. Then, of course, there's sponsorship deals and lots of other small stuff. There really is nothing to stop other agencies or individuals giving these players "grants", but this is nothing new.

I don't agree with the government grants for reasons I've already given but I really don't see it spiralling out of control. If you can provide some evidence to the contrary to back up your opinion, I'd be delighted to hear it.

Don't think you'll be hearing from ONYD for a while. He went head to head with Smashey and well..there was only going to be one winner.:D

As far as the list is concerned, one in five are from Monaghan.

Two words, Niall Moyna. He's head of the school of health and human performance in DCU, manages the Sigerson team and is basically head honcho for everything gaelic football related. Surprisingly enough he's from Monaghan! :D
