Anybody download and use samples?

Hey lads, theres a good few sites out there where you can download samples etc, whats the story with using these regarding royalty issues, i am interested in particular using drum loop samples, there are some pretty cool ones out there but with a lot of them nobody seems to know where they came from, is it ok to use these?
