Medical Card entitlement

I applied for a medical card but apparently I am somethig ridiculous like €5 over the means test for or income limit for one.
The HSE gave me a form for my GP to fill out as the card can be awarded in exceptional medical circumstances if you are over the means limit.
The chicken & egg thing is though, I have been waiting for my medical card in order to get something checked out which would be an 'exceptional medical circumstance'.
    Anyone have any advice?

    Cheers

Is there any way you can ask to get the means rechecked or ask how they were arrived at?

Ring up and talk to them. If they can, they'll often bend the rules if the person seems to need their help; they're human, not brutal servants of the state. They are *very* overworked, though, so be patient.

I was over the limit and i got it. Never really expected to get it, but was advised to try it. 4 kids 3yrs and under ....who wouldint need it!, Saying that, I doubt i was much over the limit though, but fare play to them its worth so much to pepole with medical problems and/or a large family.I think they look at it on a case by case basis, not sure.

A person working in social welfare once said to me "anyone applying for the medical card usually has a genuine reason for it, its not like you can take it into Tesco and get your shopping with it"
