Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

ROI begin their defence of their world....eh....seeding (:() at 3, and the bhoys take on the azzuri at five, ah cannay fackhin wayte! Truly want to see it, was over in Glasgow and the Scots are the maddest coolest bunch of kunts on the planet. Id love to be over there tomorrow for it.

With us not qualified along with Wales, and it looking grim for England, Norn Iron and Scotland - needing to beat the World Champions (who also happen to be World Champs at sbsorbing pressure and scoring on the break - which I think will happen when I see all this talk of Scotland pouring forward with 10 mins to go) - When was the last time all 5 of our nations didn't qualify for a major tourny?

Will be a quiet part of the World next June if the whole of the UK and Ireland are watching from the couch...

I'm really looking forward to this game - I'm crossing fingers and toes for Scotland. Italy's antics en route to the final were a disgrace, and I'd love to see Scotland get a win over them.

The Scotland team, in terms of punching above their weight and their self-belief, is very reminiscent of pre-Saipan Ireland under McCarthy. Lucky sods.

Its only on SKY isn't it? I see BBC is showing Norn Iron which holds zero interest.

Its the 17th and the game kicks off at 17.00 hrs
In Italian culture, the number 17 is considered unlucky. When viewed as the Roman numeral, XVII, it is then changed anagramtically to VIXI, which in the Latin language it translates to "I have lived", the perfect tense implying "My life is over." (c.f. "Vixerunt", Cicero's famous announcement of an execution.) The Italian airline carrier, Alitalia, does not have a seat 17. Renault sold its "R17" model in Italy as "R177." See Cesana Pariol in the sport section about the name of curve 17.

    Mike.

Italy have only won 4 games out of the 11 they have played on the 17th of any month,,,,
They have also never qualified for the Euro's after being crowned World Champs....

In fairness before any big crunch game, stats, coincidences and runs of good/bad luck in relation to things as wide as dates, numbers, locations, where the current pope is from and whether the democrats or reps are in power in the US, are always brought up, and for some reason on the particular day in question they are completely thrown out the window :( You must be able to cut the atmosphere with a knife in Glasgow, id well imagine theres a gret buzz (id well imagine a great many of the locals are already fackhin pished as well :D ). If they dont get through, its the fault of the Georgia game, i feel they couldnt get a look in with the unfair reffing and might have snagged a draw otherwise (and from seeing them play the Georgians are a team I would least like to see in our WC group, you stereotype all of these ex Soviet mini states as probably being walkovers, but they are good and give it 100% )

Yeah they are only world champions and have a squad full of world class players from 1 to 23... How dare they consider themselves a good team!

Not going over old ground but Italy were extremely fortunate to win the world Cup.
They failed to beat any decent team over 90 minutes in the knockout stages and were extremely fortunate to get past Australia due to a phantom penalty.
The current standard of international football is very low.
Scotland have a decent chance of turning Italy over as there is no outstanding team at the moment.

The current standard of international football isn't spectacular in fairness. However any team containing Buffon,Zambrotta,Cannavaro,Pirlo,Gattuso,Toni is going to take some beating. They're better players than what Scotland have and the Scots can only hope that sheer determination and a bit of luck will see them through. They do have a chance but the percentage call would be Italy to get the result they need. No team better equipped to grind out a result in this sort of situation.

Toni scores for Italy after 1 minute

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,529 ✭✭✭Im_No_Superman

    Could have been 2-0 there!

scotland are rattled.. occasion is getting them...

Scotland getting into the game now, really getting stuck into the Italian players. Let's see if they can keep this up for 90 minutes.

Too many high balls pumped up to McFadden, the Italian defence will deal with them all day long.

    That was close from Scotland

Scotland steadying the ship now, but Italy are the masters at shutting out the opposition when leading. Expect it to finish 1-0.

Ref being fairly "fair" to Scotland so far! :D

What a fúckin save by Gordon! Di Natale scores from the rebound but it's given as offside.

    Great save indeed.

Hutton getting a lot of time on the ball.

    Wasn't even offside.

    Italy robbed.

The linesman flagged for handball before the first shot

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,096 ✭✭✭An Citeog

Off the line by Pirlo. Half time now, still 1-0 Italy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,407 ✭✭✭✭LuckyLloyd

You could play the second half 20 times from here and Italy would probably go through to the Finals 18 or 19 times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,096 ✭✭✭An Citeog

    Barry Ferguson scores for Scotland!

Looks like he was offside aswell. 1-1 now with 25 minutes to play.

Is a draw good enough for Scotland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,594 ✭✭✭Fozzy

A draw's only good enough if Ukraine beat France I believe

Not on its own. Afaik, if this match ends level, Scotland need Ukraine to beat France at home on Wednesday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,148 ✭✭✭✭Raskolnikov

If Scotland lose, they are out.
If Scotland draw, they need Ukraine to beat France.
If Scotland win, they are through.

Italy would be justifiably agrieved if they don't qualify tonight. A goal disallowed and an off-side one against them given.

If Scotland lose, they are out.
If Scotland draw, they need Ukraine to beat France OR Faroe Islands to beat Italy
If Scotland win, they are through.

Fixed it for you (though its unlikely that Faroe Islands will beat the World Champions at home)

Think it was disallowed for handball by Di Natale rather than offside. Ferguson was definitely offside though.

Scotland actually taking the ascendency now . . .
