I definitely would be against including SmitfraudFix in that list. It is designed for a specific piece of malware, and would cause problems when users who aren't infected will run it. It would just create a headache.

Ok guys, good idea. Keep adding to the list and I'll take a look at breaking it down to a more manageable index at a later date when we have a good amount of content.

Anyone else have issues installing Spybot Search and Destroy? I get an error when it tries to update itself during the install.

    Good list though.

It would be probably be a good idea to list the items in a checklist kinda way giving the steps needed to keep your PC healthy and after each step link to a few examples of software. Because for a novice like me, reading pages and pages of lists of programs just becomes confusing as you don't know in which sequence the programs need to be run or what each one does.
It would serve as a handy reference and probably stop a lot of repeat threads.

I'm shocked nobody has mentioned Hitman Pro. It automatically and sequentially runs some of the antispyware mentioned above as well as some other nice stuff.

I would second that in the wrong hands down right risky... The post needs to be edited to take out ..>>> smitfraudfix and leave Superanti spyware..

Start, run, msconfig. Thats a brill windows integrated tool that configures exactly what starts when ur computer boots up. Theres generally loads of stuff there that u dont need, like itunes helper, wireless provisioning (if u dont use wireless) etc. Itll speed up ur startup time greatly

This isn't the place to ask such a question

However to answer your question, download and run the Norton Removal Tool from here

If you don't run any anti-virus software but occasionally want to check you if that file that you downloaded is virus free, I recommend

    http://virscan.org/

It checks the file based on many checkers and also knows it if it has seen it before.

I'd consider adding firefox's noscript add-on; it's served me well.

Get the uninstaller from their website:
    http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
run that to clean it out.

Microsoft Security Essentials is now free:

    I second majestic0110 , malwarebytes anti-malware is a top tool and FREE.

for realtime protection you can get Spybot S&D, or eventually get the full version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (comes with RT protection, IP blocker and scheduled scans and updates - buyers share tips and malwarebytes coupon codes freely, just google it).

also Stinger from McAfee (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/) which is a cross between an antivirus and a malware removal tool. Good luck!

If I could add to the list?

I've been using Advanced System Care for the last couple of months.

    Really neat little tool.

Theres a Freeware version, and of course a full version for $20 or something...

Can't link at the moment, downloads.com is blocked in work.

    To add to the list:

I run this once a month & it has picked up items that Kaspersky has not: http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner

    Anti-Malware: http://www.iobit.com/security360.html
    Malwarebytes aswell as mentioned previously.

PeerBlock - block communication with advertising or spyware oriented servers
    http://www.peerblock.com/
It's amazing to see what computers are trying to communicate with your PC.

Temporary File Cleaner - Best program out there for cleaning your temp files: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/files/file/187-tfc-temp-file-cleaner-by-oldtimer/

    All free btw...:)
