With most of the bangers gone from Irelands roads now, its rare to see cars that are quite old. And when you do, they are normally pieces of poo. However, now and then, I do see a car thats just fairly run of the mill, but still makes me think "thats actually still a nice car". Thinking of regular run of the mill cars that used to grace our roads in their thousands, but which have now been consigned to the scrap heap, which ones do you still find pleasing to the eye?

I nominate the Toyota Carina II.

plenty of those carinas down here beyond the pale. (co limerick, and general munster area really).

Other old cars that are sometimes nice to see are MK2 ford granadas (the huge box shape ones), volvo 240s and 340s, saw an isuzu Aska a few months back.. now that's rare. I also often see
battered, but solid renault 11. plus many other's a probably cant remember right now

Yeah that model Carina II were everywhere here. My old man had a 2.0 litre petrol model, it could move. Probably one of the best car's Toyota produced. A firm favourite with taxi drivers too. Still a few knocking around the place though.

Ford Sierra, Nissan Bluebird, Opel Ascona, Talbot Sunbeam, Hillman Hunter, Renault 4 all come to mind.

See a 1985 Toyota Corolla saloon belting past me most morings on the way to work.

Didnt see that thread, but this is more of a "cars we have forgotten, but still raise a smile when you see one" thread.

I seen a lovely Opel Omega 3 litre a few months ago. It was black and in really good nick. Lovely looking car.

My mum had a 88 Carina Executive. It was the last of the old boxy model. Not a bad car and had over 200k miles on it before we sold it.
Then she had a 92 Carina E up until recently another big miler.

I'll second the Mk 2 Golf :) There are some lovely examples around which have been kept very well and haven't been given the muppet treatment. Don't suppose mine qualifies - it's only 12 years old and a Mk 3 ;) but it's pretty standard (for a GTi) and a gorgeous car to drive.

renault 19's all day everyday, talk about comfort, style, whether it be the hatch or the saloon, modified or unmodified an absolute stunner of a car, in the uk there is still a big 19 scene, unfortunately they have been all but forgotten here, the shame in the beautiful 19 was reliability, electrics were okay, not as much problems as with the more modern renaults but engine reliability was the major problem, head gaskets became a problem if you spent more than 20 seconds stuck in traffic, in fact the whole cooling system was blighted, the thermostats randomly got stuck closed and began their mission to melt your engine, plug leads always jobbed out but that was no biggie, the bendix (widowmaker) abs often failed completely but thankfully these were only on some models, still though they were the only major problems in this god of the road, either im stuck in the past or just have **** taste, or maybe both

Good man Ceb, I also like the 19 esp the phase 1. Not sure I'd agree about the bad reliability though, any ones that I experienced were excellent even with big mileage on them. Although the cooling system did need to have the coolant changed regularly to reduce chance of rusty pipes and HG problems etc.

Saw an Opel Record a few weeks ago and that put a big smile on my face, the old man had one after the other for years. Great car.

Saw an Citroen CX recently too, was well impressed it was still on the go.

Still have my 95 Seat Ibiza S. I love driving that car. It still feels great. The Missus wants me to get rid of it but I'd be very sad to see it go. :(

I've got to go with the OP, my late father got a Carina II in 88 when they came out as a company car in gold, I thought we were the luckiest family in the world, and it had ... wait for it ... a tape deck! Would love to know where the car is these days though.

theres a 1990 carina II down here, all original untouched, an old man owns it, it came in for a service once and to be honest ive seen brand new cars leave showrooms in worse condition, i mean this thing was immaculate, as new, so yeah after seeing that i have to agree the CII rocks

Ahh the Mk2 Golf in standard format, no eyebrows and other silly mods.
I had a nice silver 5 door with genuine Le Castellet alloys from an anniversary model Gti and it was really a lovely car, until a german driving a Mk3 golf knocked me out of action on an icy corner.
The thing I liked most about the older golfs was the fact that they were so modular and interchangable, I wanted power steering and took one off a crashed diesel auto golf it just bolted straight on, same with the factory tinted windows.
try that with most modern cars....

I always admired Camry VPi models. a guy near us had one. always kept it very well, As a kid I always thought a 2.0 petrol was so flash!neighbours had an 89 2.0 GL D-Turbo (90bhp) and that was very comfy.
    88Camry1.jpg

    Basically a big Carina.

Peugeot 405...handsome, great handling, good diesel engines. Peugeot made some great car cars in the '80's. They've really gone backwards...

Alfa 164 (quite similar to 405 - both Pininfarina)

I'd love to see a nice Isuzu Aska - a more eclectic choice than a Carina II I think!

A neighbour of mine had a few Renault 20s... I dig old French cars, hate the new ones!

Yep ... 1996 Carina 1.8 128,000 miles and still running smoothly - best car ever. Bought it for STG 1100 three years ago. Still see plenty being used as taxis. Buy in England, because the good people there prefer Ford etc. and they are much cheaper than here.
