What Litre? 1.0 - 1.6

Im about to buy my first car. Ive been driving a daewoo matiz 800cc for the last 6 months:mad: and think its time for me to get a bigger car...

Anyway i was gonna go with an alpha r. 147(1.6)...or else a focus (1.4)

Now im on a bit of a budget and i was told that a 1.6ltr or a 1.4ltr will cost a fortune to run with petrol and the biggest i should go for is a 1.2...

Is there any logic in this...or will i only burn petrol by the amount i drive???

in general bigger engines burn more fuel for every mile you travel, they go faster too for a given car.

the main reason to go for a 1.0 is the much lower tax and insurance. a 1.2 won't save you much over a 1.4.
the heavier the car, the more fuel you use. sometimes in identical models, larer engines will give better MPG. depends on how well matched the engine power and cars weight are.

I can't see a 147 being harder on fuel than the Focus. especially as you'll have to rag the 1.4 engine to make any progress.

May be consider something like a Suzuki Swift as well.

Well it costs me about €40 a week to fill and run my matiz...i just dont want to have to spend up to €100 to run a car that would be a bit to much..

ive heard 147 guzzle the petrol!

I reckon your Matiz does 45-50mpg. any of the cars listed above will do around 35mpg.

Well according to the manufactures figures the Matiz does 46 MPG and the 1.6 147 does 34 MPG. So you would be putting about €54 into the 147 to do the same distance.

Ford say the 1.4 focus does 42 MPG so you would be putting €44 euro into it to do the same distance.

I'm not sure how accurate the manufactures figures are to real word figures.
