Tumble dryer vent

    I serviced the tumble dryer recently and when vacuuming the vent outlet on the machine I inadvertently broke to plastic 'cross' on it. Does anyone know what purpose this serves and whether it will be alright without it?

    I would presume all it does is ensure the mouth of the pipe does not close.
