Hello every one. i have a friend who left school last year at start of sixth year. he didn't do his leaving cert, i dont blame him for doing that cuz i know how his family is . now by talking some sense to him, he wants to do his leaving and probably go to college, what are the options for him.

Would he be able to go back to his old school and ask them would they take him back into 5th/6th year?

No, it's not his only chance. If he can't get back into the school and there is no other school that he can go to, he could do a Post Leaving Certificate Course (PLC) and apply to CAO using that to get into college. PLC courses are generally linked to a certain area, ie if you do a PLC course in Business and Computing, then you can only apply for college places (and generally only in ITs, with a few exceptions) in that area.

Well lots of people do repeats in the Institute and Ashfield, but you sorta implied his famioly isn't doing too great at the moment, so that mightent be an option.

Alternitavely, Marion College in Sandymount, Dublin has a 7th year for people repeating, and it's a public school.

I don't know much about Ashfield but I think both of them are private (€€€) grinds schools, they'd take a lot of people repeating or whatever.

If he can't get back into his normal school/doesn't want to do the LC I'd say do what someone else already said, go to a senior college or whatnot, do a PLC and see if he can get into a university that way.

He can go back to school to do his leaving...my friend did that last year, she quit before December coz she just couldn't handle it. She is back this year...tis her 7th year in school...

she can apply to any school to take her but they are not obliged to.

She can apply to any school, though many schools are not keen to take people in half way through a Leaving Cert. course.

Since she has only been out of school a relatively short time, she should contact standard second level schools. If she had been out of school longer, I would have recommended Pearse College in Crumlin as they specialise in adults returning to education.

Don't you actually have to have done your Leaving Cert to do a Post Leaving Certificate course?

I don't believe so. A girl from my school who left after TY is now doing a course in... possibly Sallynoggin College of Further Education. Definitely doing some kind of a course anyway.

No, i teach PLC courses and we get students from time to time who have left school early but come back and do the course and use it to get into college.
