Dermal Implants

I'm not great at describing things, but I'll give it a go.

    I wanted to get either:
    A) I have my bellybutton pierced, and i wanted to get the skin below my belly button pierced, horizontally...

    Or

B: Piercings above both my hips, slanted outwards.

I was recommended to get dermal implants. I know that any piercing I get will leave a scar etc etc, but Ive only just heard about dermal implants, so I'm very aprehensive.

Basically I just wondered if anyone could tell me, how they put them in, how they take them out, basically all the good and bad points!

    Thanks!

Dermal = outer layer of skin

What you're thinking of is micro dermals body shock does them go ask paddy about them in there

yep, yer thinking of dermal anchors or micro dermals.

    From what I can gather...

They don't reject as much. However this has yet to be proven as piercers have only been using this method for surface piercings for about two years now (while the procedure itself has been around much longer using experimental jewellery). From what I have seen, surface bars can last much much longer, for years in fact, when inserted correctly and cared for properly.

Having read up on t'interweb about them, I have yet to hear of any micro dermals lasting longer than 5 months.

They can fall out very quickly, as they are inserted into a tiny slit in the skin. There are other methods however.

I am very curious to get some myself, but I'm very doubtful after reading up and actually asking people in other piercing communities how long they've had their anchors in. I might still try, as surface piercings always go tits up on me anyway :p

Another bad point, they are ridiculously expensive, as the jewellery costs are so high.

Places I know that do them are Bodyshock and Wildcat.

More info here - just search "dermal anchor" or something similar

    Thanks!

Yeah i was talking to Paddy from Bodyshock about it briefly. Sorry yeah he said "dermal anchor", I just read it too quickly!

Do they slit the skin and slide it in or what? And i know there'll be scarring, but how much does anyone know?

He said that a surface piercing wouldnt work where i wanted it (i only mentioned my hips to him)

Grr... I can't check up for you cos I'm in work and piercing sites are banned. It should tell you the procedures in the BME wiki somewhere, if not, google it. Scarring pretty much depends on the person. I've only seen one or two scars from dermal anchors, and they looked like warts to me. But this depends on how you heal the scar, and how bad the rejection was in the first place.

For the hips, a surface bar would be too long, and the piercing wouldn't be able to drain properly in the middle, causing a build-up and ultimately rejection. However, I don't think that dermal anchors will fix this, as it will still face the same risk (somewhat minimalized due to physical size of the jewellery) of getting smacked about the place as a bar, with the added risk of getting pulled out.

It really is up to yourself, and I loooove hip piercings, but they seem very very temporary to me and would require a lot of work!

At the end of the day, your body is individual, and could react either really well or really bad to them :)

Thanks for all your help Jenizzle!

Do you think it would work(either dermal anchors or surface piercing) underneath my bellybutton? (Horizontally)

I'm not really too worried about scarring, as long as it's not a massive scar!

For below the belly button you gotta think about trousers/jeans/skirts whatever youre wearing catching on it, bumping it, and generally aggrivating it. Slightly lower risk of that than with the hips, but you have to be careful about any accidental bumping/rubbing of the area, or even pulling it out.

Im gettin a micro on my nape rather than the piercing, this link should help you out http://www.bmezine.com/news/pubring/20061106.html

irritation etc depends on where you wear your clothes, like I wear stuff just under my bellybutton so it'd be well uncomfortable for me, but people who wear totally low rise stuff would be fine...

the hip ones are very prone to rejection by the way..well, piercings anyway, micro's are meant to be much more permanent

They shouldn't really be that high as the jewelery isn't that expensive. For example when i was in the states I was pricing some of the reputable studios and the ones that were doing micro's were charging 50 dollars for them where as in ireland about 80 yoyos is the going rate.

theyre about €60 in bodyshock if i remember correctly.
theres 2 methods you can do them, either with a needle or a small dermal punch.
paddy does em using a needle. i had mine in my forearm, never really healed because there was too much movement and people grabbing me. eventually got ripped out by my puppy. small scar about 2mm in diameter, barely noticeable.

its still very expensive though. To get a surface piercing, it costs 50-80 quid. For micro dermals that look the same as the surface piercing it will be at least €160. I'd prefer to pay less on something that can probably last the same amount of time in the skin, when done correctly.

I have the skin below my bellybutton pierced horizontally,
Had it done about 3 years ago...wasn't all that painful to get done and the piercer put a long ptfe bar in. The piercing was a pain in the hole to heal and only lasted about 2 months. I would not recommend it! Even if you go for dermal anchors, it will cost you about 200 euro and they will migrate after a months, you might get longer out of it then I did but 200 euro is a bit much.

I had that horizontal surface piercing, Paddy did it and it lasted five years. It didn't reject, I took it out.. It got a slight bit irratated in the middle of it and I think was slightly torn or something and after a while of trying to make it go down I just gave up on it and I'm not left with a pretty non attractive scar cos of it.
I wouldn't bother with hip surface piercings of anchors, cos either one are gonna get irratateed. If you make up your mind to get that bit under your navel done, then I'd go for a surface piercing rather then anchors for that. Just cos you have something that's "permanent" and suppose to stay in doesn't eliminate the issue that it'll still get angry and pissed off and swelling and whatnot, so with something that's already gonna be a tricky placement or that's gonna be bashed about a bit I'd go with a surface piercing,so you can just remove it easy enough yourself if you choose to, rather then maybe being stuck with something that's gonna keep being a pain in the ass.

I've yet to see hip piercings that haven't been all red and rejecting. I'd like to see a successful pair because whenever I think of hip piercings now I think 'OOZE, CRUST, ITCHY, EEEW' and imagine how it must feel to have pants rubbing off them...

bmezine has a good few of em it, would link ye but can't seem to get on to it at the mo, I know a few people who've had them, never actually got to see them though...

Price list on the Ashbourne Wildcat Myspace: Dermal Anchor- €35 (Jewellery not Included).

That sounds pretty good price wise. How much would the jewellery add on?

    xtruthx

Yeah I was told 65€ each in metalmorphosis.. but to be honest, I've been hearing a lot of bad reviews about that place...

Would Bodyshock be the best place to go?

Would a surface piercing work just underneath my bellybutton? My trousers wouldnt be that high at all, so I'm not worried about it rubbing!

After looking into the hip piercing... I might leave that one on the side for the time being, and just go for the navel..! I want something different, and those two appeal to me!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 958 ✭✭✭porn_star

There's no guarantee that any surface piercing will work and not reject. under your navel has more of a chance then hip piercings. I had mine for five years, other people have them months. Depends on the person and a good piercer.

    Hi guys!
I work in the Ashbourne Wildcat, the prices are(jewellery included) €65 for a plain anchor and €75 for a jewelled one, The jewellery can be expensive cuz its a new enough procedure but as its growing more popular it will probably go down in price, they were €100 a yr ago!

As for Healing, It is rather new so there isnt much feedback, I think its true that surface bars will hold and be more succesful long term but the dermal anchors allow you to pierce somewhere thats not suitable(ie; Hips, Chest, Forehead etc..) for surface bars to pierced.

I have myself had my forehead done twice and only yesterday took it out,
The first one having lasted over a year and was perfect until my boyfriend Headbutted me (by accident :) ), and It then migrated out, and the second not settling because of the scar tissue from the first one.

But I think alot of this is down to jewllery, there are 3 small holes in the base of the titanium anchor that bond with the flesh over time, the 3rd hole is so small tht it dosnt seem to hold as well as the larger ones so I think(personally), thats a flaw in the manufacturing and a reason why some of our grew out, so theres hope!!

Sorry for the long post .. nearly put myself asleep!!)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,183 ✭✭✭✭Will

depends which manufacturer you guys use for the micro dermals, some of the are good, others not so great.

From my own personal experience (and what ive chatted to others about) they find that leaving them be is best.

*in france they were €100 for normal ones, thats about 1.5months ago

Decisions Decisions! I've pretty much ruled out the hips now! I'd rather one rejected piercing than two!

Snakebite or BodyShock? (I would come to Ashbourne.... but I don't live close at all!)

Is it alright to give the surface piercing under my bellybutton a go? Or is it just better to scrap surface piercings altogether?!

Sorry about the millions of questions!

was in snakebite today, asking about micro's, they don't do them yet. They've been in contact with the guy in the states who invented em and he's sorta lessing his like of them, the majority of people who get them end up back in to get them removed in 6-8 months. To have them removed you have to go to a doc cuz it's pretty much a surgical procedure, and you're generally left with a big ass scar. Rejection and infection are still highly possible and if infection occurs it's bad cuz there's only one entry/exit point, so the gunk has no where to go and build up and gets worse...

As I've said Snakebite has been in contact with the guy who started them, and are going to try them out on themselves before sticken em in the public, and in about 6mnths if they're hapy with the progress then they'll start doing them.

I was told that metalmorphis and bodyshock do em, can't member which studio this was specified from but a Paul dude from whichever one, said that he doesn't like doing them but since the public wants them he's givin the public what it wants...

I was also agreed with when I said I wasn't going to metal morphisis after seeing whats come out of there....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 179 ✭✭Hooly22

Yeha the thing about the removal is making me reluctant.

I don't know if I should bother with a surface piercing under my bellybutton?

Yeah I found metalmorphosis grand, but after reading all the stuff on them... I don't think I'll go back there!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,846 ✭✭✭Le Rack

yeah I've witnessed dodgey stuff there, and anyone I ever hear of going there usually gets a slap or summit and made go to a reliable studio...

Sure try it out if you really want it, I know if it rejects it'll be like 70 quid down the tubes but if not then you've got a cool new hole in your body!!! :D

I've just taught myself how to do dermal anchors and they are FUN. I really like doing them but won't be doing customers til I get a few more practice ones done and improve my technique/speed/accuracy. :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,183 ✭✭✭✭Will

what method do you use? dermal punch or just piercing needle?
just curious, been talking to a few piercers and everyone has theire own way

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 35 TheBlondeOne

Piercing needle. Well on the four i've done so far, i'm gonna practice my technique befor doing them for customers. :D
