    Hi,
Why do you need a trainer for your dog?
Why can't you do it yourself?
I don't mean to sound harsh but if someone else trains your dog, That person will be the "Pack Leader" (even if you only have one dog)
Its a bit like getting a Nanny for your Kids,
Nanny will be primary caregiver and the one they'll look to for instruction, totally undermining your role.

Its always best if possible to train the dog yourself,
What kind of training does your dog need?
if its basic obedience, this should be done by you,
If you do decide to go with a trainer, you will also need to be trained to use the trainer's techniques as otherwise you will just confuse the poor mutt.
I had a trainer train my dog several years ago, it was a disaster.
Poor dog ended up very defeated with a broken spirit.
I now train my dogs myself, much more fun and far more rewarding for them and me.
I'd bet you're more than capable of training your dog yourself and maybe just need a bit of direction.
I assume you walk the dog yourself?
If so, thats the best time to begin training and instructing him.
Firstly, walk him for 20 minutes or so (on the leash) to release pent-up energy, when he starts to slow down, teach him to sit,
praise him when he does it properly. Don't ever react to a negative response.
(Thats like slapping your kid for not understanding your request.)

It will quickly get to the stage where your dog is watching you,
    waiting for your next request/command.
    You can easily do this,
    I have,
Now my dogs walk beside me instead of pulling me. When we meet another dog, my two sit nicely, waiting for the other dog to pass-by.
Dog trainers are good if you want specialised training, but for a family dog, you need to be the trainer.
