    hi folks
thinking of adding an early 80s starlet to my collection

does anyone know why this is so expensive?

    http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=642171

an 80's starlet ..rwd. its left hand drive...

id be interested in getting my hands on a 1.0L (993cc) RHD RWD one, in good condition.. (60 series)

    any ideas?

or maybe an early 70's ford escort, in good condition unmodified.

Probably because it has extremely little mileage for its age  Although I wouldn't really trust that kind of mileage from a car that old, but that's just me being paranoid :p

My 1st car was a 1983 Starlet 1.3GL 5 door. If you are looking at one make sure to check:

Rust along the rear hatch sill
Remove the plastic covers in the boot over the rear wheel arches to check for rust. Mine ended up mainly as fibreglass filler.
Check under the rubber seal on all the doors. Due to how the rubber seal was held in place water would run down them and pool at the bottom causing the bottom of the doors to rust to pieces. Again, mine ended up mainly as filler.

Despite only 46bhp it was rather interesting to drive in the wet due to the RWD and 135/13 tyres all round. Exiting a roundabout in the wet was more a case of hoping not to 4 wheel drift in to the centre island.

Good luck finding one in one piece - suspect a 70's Escort may be a better bet as you'd probably have trouble sourcing any parts for the Starlet, it was difficult enough in the early 90's.

Them RWD starlets are like gold dust - can be souped to bits just like the mk2 escort - AFAIK you can use any of the ford running gear that fits the mk2 escort - even the 2.0 litre pinto engine and box - I saw a fair few with 1.6 and 2.0 engines in them, but they are getting scarcer by the day.

Don't know if I would go for a left hand drive one though.

They are now popular with the drift community. However, seeing that one is an automatic, it wouldn't be as desirable as a manual one. The price is by far too much. They were crap cars then, and they are still crap cars now.

If I'm right, the starlet's imported from Germany I know the seller an he's got them from there before And he used to imported mk 2 Escorts from South Africa I think they went well before he got to advertise them though
