have been thinking of changing cars and just spotted this - with Toyota Corolla on top - suppose it's not all that surprising! Problem is I wanted to spice things up a bit - the Corolla is a bit dull..

    http://news.uk.msn.com/Article.aspx?cp-documentid=6779520

"Least reliable vehicle surveyed was the Alfa Romeo GTV (1996-2003) with 97 faults per 100 models, with the Renault Espace (1997-2002) second with 77 faults and the Jaguar XK8 (1996-2006) third with 62 faults."

Renault really didn't do too well overall - which is a pity.

So - on light of this - any recommendations for a 'reliable' car that has a little bit of personality?!

And yet when people slate Alfas here, we get the old rollie eye smiley?

And proof yet again that the French should stick to making wine.

New model Civic hatchback couldn't be described as dull. New model Lancer? Mazda MX5? What's your budget/circumstances?

and, er.... those surveys are flawed! Yeah.

Luck of the Boards people, they always seem to buy the 3 in 100 that don't give faults. Must be...

The JD Power surveys are the most reliable. When I worked for BMW they were the only surveys that mattered or were mentioned during meetings.

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,454 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

are they still doing JD Power surveys for Europe?

The JD Power surveys try to measure customer satisfaction from people buying new cars. They're not about reliability ;)

Faults = character. At least that's what they used to say.

Yes - Civic is nice but I think overpriced due to the boyracer demand..

Budget of about 10,000 - do a lot of long distance driving, won't be trading anything in - will pass my own car (polo) onto family - not worth selling on!

Want something that has a bit of a kick though :D

your title of "most reliable cars in 2007" let me to believe you were looking for a new car!

Consider a Honda Integra, Mitsubishi FTO, Toyota Celica, Mazda MX5?

I'm sorry - no now a *new* car but second hand - new to me ;):D

All of those that you listed above are nice - verrry nice - but not practical for me I'm afraid. I just want something reliable - something safe for long distances and something that has a decent kick in it for overtaking and the motorways etc. Not necessarily a rocket or anything too mad! I'm thinking the Honda Civic (but a bit pricey for value..), Toyota Corolla Terra Wt hatchback (http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=813679 or maybe the Ford Focus.

    Any thoughts?

But do you also slag off Audis (worse position that Alfas) or BMWs with their less than impressive 17th position?

Interesting. Very interesting. BMW, Audi, and VW, and Skoda seem to be going backwards.

I'd rather break down every day than drive a Corolla !!

At least Alfa are consistant !! :D

Look at the reliability with a bit of relativity. The least reliable car of all in that WhatCar survey, the '96-'03 Alfa GTV has 97 faults per 100 cars

This means it will have less than one fault per year!

Or present it in a sensational way like What Car?:
    What Car? wrote:
Alfa also had the most unreliable individual model - the old GTV. A staggering 97% of GTV owners experienced trouble

    Yep and where's Mazda?

There's usually vieing for top spot or at least Top 5...

A Focus 1.6 might fit the bill, great car in every way.

Thanks pburns - I think I led the discussion on another tangent altogether!!
