Hi, I am getting my first tattoo done very soon and I am a bit clueless as to who is good and who is not so good to go to. I don't mind forking out a bit extra if it means more quality. Could somebody please recommend the best places to go in Dublin? At the moment I've been thinking about the snakebite, but i'd just like to see what else is out there first.
    Cheers.

It depends on what it is your getting done: tribal, colour, blackwork etc. different artists are reccomended for different things. From my own experience though I'd say have a look in Colourworks. They're next to Central bank above the clothes shop "flip"
Other people who get mentioned are Jani, in celestial ring (I think), the italians in Art Tattoo and Zulu Tattoos.

If you tell us the style of tattoo or the kind of thing that you're thinking about we can make suggestions... I had mine done by Mariusz in Snakebite, and I love them! :D

The design I want to have done is on my upper left arm. Its kind of an armband type but it does not go all the way around my arm and its goes at an angle down instead of straight around. Anyway, the design is of different sized autumn leaves caught in a gust of wind blowing around my arm. They are quite small in size and are coloured. The coulor is a fuse of dark to light orange. I think the best description of the coloration is a sunburst guitar, if anybody is familiar. It is very similar to the type of coloring on a gibson les paul sunburst model.
So the whole thing doesnt seem too detailed and i think it should be quite easy for a good artist to get it right, but I just want to make sure i choose somebody good. My biggest fear of all is getting the tattoo and it turning out crap. When you go to get it done, does the artist draw it on your skin with temporary ink first so that you can see how it will look before he actually begins?

yep, they'll put it on in a blue temp ink type thing first off, and you can look at it in the mirror and say what you think about design/placing. usually (in my experience), they'll photocopy a picture into the blue ink and place it on you that way, so it'll be pretty much exactly what you bring in...

i'd be inclined to recommend darren in colourworks for it.

    Deadmonkey,

Have a look at http://www.remistattoo.com especially the colour section as I believe he has something like the leaf in there

Based on the vivid colouring that you want, I'd say go for Justin in Zulu or Darren in Colourworks.

(Not personal experience, but from work of theirs that I've seen)

For oldskool I'd agree that Classic Ink would be the way to go. For nuskool stuff I'd say colourworks would be your best bet Rob in there does amazing stuff.

darren in colourworks is pretty awesome too, he did my polar bear, and for a piece i was looking *so* forward to, it came out infinitely better than i could have possibly anticipated.

They pretty much specialise in nuskool in colourworks from what I can see. They have some really nice pieces. I prefer to go to different people for different styles as what one tattooist may hate doing another may love and you'll see that in the tattoo. Who would you guys recomend for oldskool stuff? I want it fully custom no-flash (there will be a few standard images like swallows, diamonds, lightning bolts etc) I know Classic Ink is good for oldskool but who in there in particular?

Hey guys, any recommendations for who'd be the best to do an old school praying hands tattoo with some shading, all black and grey? Zulu/Colourworks?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,196 ✭✭✭Crumble Froo

colour works are awesome for their colourwork, but justin in zulu has some pretty aweomse balck and white stuff. was looking at the black and white cats he did on piercer barry while he was doing my leg piece, and i just had to be impressed. he did my leg piece which turned out infinitely better than anticipated, and is just an allround nice guy as well as an awesome tattoo-ist.

will do, im going in to sus out prices etc tomorrow!

  • Registered Users Posts: 16 vathar

Honestly, for something you're likely to keep for the rest of your life, don't compromise on the price. This is not to say bend over, drop your pants, apply some lube n give da money, but if you happen to have a good feeling after looking at one particular artist's piece of work, go for it and don't think about spending a few extra bucks.

  • Registered Users Posts: 142 ✭✭Nools

oh i no that, im jsut finding out the cost of it from diff studios as am I going to get a feel for the parlor! i may not have a tat but i have piercings and i no the importance of the studio and the person doing the work, vs a cheap and messy job

yeah and to further add to vathar's sound-advice post, try go with a tattoo artist who is enthusiastic about the piece, if they're genuinely interested chances are they will do a better job than someone who isn't
