Maybe I didn't read the box properly , I saw the game in gamestop there about an hour ago and there was a sticker on the box saying that it included some bla bla gold bla bla online thingy service . I started to read the back and there was something about a windows live subscription for online play , so I promptly dropped the box and checked out the COD 4 instead . Got out to my car and started wondering what on earth they were on about .

Do you need to subscribe to something to play this online ?

You need a Windows live account (which is free to set up). You can still play the game online with a normal silver account - I think the gold account is for matchmaking games, ability to unlock multiplayer achievements etc.

This will probably be the end of free online gaming on the PC which is an absolute sham if it does happen imo.

Its only for the achievements as far as i know. Watched the Eurogamer review and he talked about it. So help me god if they start charging for every bloody online game.

You will only need (Accoridng to Microsoft) a gold (Pay) windows live account for:
    Cross platform play if supported
    Advanced matchmaking
Also think you need gold to send friend messages, achievements and pc 2 pc online play are free with GFWlive Silver although I hate the thing it still doesnt mean extra money need to be payed to play online

games for windows live is a buggy pile of **** that we normally get for free packaged with EA games anyway

however the main functionality of the game can still be using a free account after much hair pulling and game crashing

I doubt that will ever happen, players would be manic and with thier superior FPS skills who knows what would happen. They may get away with partial charge if they offer something spectacular but Steam is offering most of the features offered by this thing but for free.

not possible. they will have to change the way the internet works and networking standards before that ever becomes a reality. Hamachi is an example of how this will never happen.

Hamachi is an example of how 360style p2p gaming will work, tbh pc gamers get dedicated servers thats what makes it better.

Server hosts make cash from them, we pay for them as its worth it, Live is great but the lag is unreal as its all p2p with no dedicated servers, i will renew my Live subbie when games have dedicated servers on it, till then i stick with pc and if GFF want cash from me to let me play on their Cod4 server i would give it, same for spookey donkeys clan when they had their BF2 servers, but not tig cos gaming365 sucked balls, if rev wanted money for his old IOL servers would give it too. BTC too i find a nice server and stick with it regardless of the the game when UT3 is out proper i hit up Ut.ie servers. Thats how online PC gaming works, you pay for the server and get what you pay for good online gaming.

But paying a subscription to a p2p network i should get porn and games for free shouldnt i?

Yeah if you want advanced matching making, ranked games etc you need a gold account which you have to pay for. But you do get a free one month trail gold account. None of these are anywhere near being essential.

However every single player and multiplayer mode is playable free of charge out of the box.

More than that I'm actually very impressed with this game having only played it briefly on the Xbox 360 (was impressed with it then).

This is not a direct port they actually went out of their way to add additional content in both single player and multiplayer and updated the graphics with Direct X 10 support(which simply adds anti-aliasing options) and better textures.

The only down side it keeps crashing in co-op on my mates computer :( and have read online their is a quite few stability issues. Having said that no crashes at all on my machine.
It has tough enough system requirements and a really long install time of 30-45 minutes! (12GB hard drive required)

So far I would rate this as a pretty fine PC game. Just hope Microsoft get some patches out quick.

Came back to post what Kdjacl said above , as an online pc gamer I have been contributing towards a server for the last seven years or so . But if I wasn't in a clan I could still play all the games I play online on public servers provided by the hosting companies .

Of the 5 ppl in my clan that bought it only 2 of us were able to get the game working at a playable level - some could not run it at all despite having more then ideal hardware - also the gold live trial codes that came with the game didnt work for any of us - its a crap console port. (think Halo 2 on PC)

However it is a crap console port of a hugely enjoyable and well made console game which me and a clanmate had a blast playing through in coop mode live-list mode (for free) - the action is fast and exciting and coming from some1 who hadnt played the console version much the gameplay and graphics are a very high standard for a PC 3rd person shooter.

I was just about to post about this being a good port, before I read Hercule post. I played from start to finish with out one crash and a decent frame rate. Even alt-tabbing loads didn't affect it.

Gears is still in my top 5 360 games, havent played it on PC tho, doubt my rig could handle it. However the MP i dont play any more since the rise of shotgun spamming in the game. PC version probably wont suffer from this tho due to more accuracy with a mouse and kb, but it ruined the 360 version online IMO.

Totally agree, absolute shambles of a port, game just seemed to run laggy (Even though FPS was @ 60) but thats prob coz of the lousy texture streaming in the port, would have expected better from PCF (Painkiller Devs) but due to the horrible stuttering I gave up, had soo much potential too coz imo the M&K played this better than the 360 controller,
