    From looking at a lot of the crosswind vids though, It might look scary to us, but i get the feeling this is normal for piots, look how they come in sideways but once they land they straighten up and i doubt the passengers notice anything weird.

    Yes "Tacking" is totally normal in these instances, been on a flight before as the A/C was tacking due to high crosswinds and could just about see the runway for an angle.

    The term is indeed "crabbing". Never heard of "tacking" maybe you misheard "tracking". The two types of crosswind approach are crab or wing down.

    As Chiron said - it's known as crabbing. There are two variants of "wing down" - sideslipping and forward slipping. This has been the topic of many a heated debate in the (bar) debriefing room for generations of pilots.
