its funny though, people seem to understand right away the problem with conflict diamonds, but mention fairtrade products and they look at you like your posh and obviously have too much money too burn.

Back on topic. Personally in Dublin I like "Coffee Society" across the road from Pravda on the northside of the ha'penny.

It has a nice decor, good low volume background music and its quiet so you can hear yourself think or talk. Tends to mainly have a clientele that likes to get a coffee and read their newspaper or softback so it suits me down to the ground.

I also like "Joy of Coffee" in temple bar but it tends to usually be crowded with noisy tourists. On a rainy day in the middle of the week it can be nice to stop in and get a coffee.

Went into Cafe Society in Ranelagh this afternoon. Lukewarm coffee and the service was characterised by indifference verging on hostility. Staff seemed to be more interested in chatting to each other than in serving customers.

I went up the road to the Bruschetta (I think that's what it's called) - a little hole-in-the-wall type of cafe - much nicer coffee and friendly service.

i've really struggled to get a decent espresso in central dublin but on my last trip home was relatively surprised that standards seem to have improved.

The Bald Barista on aungier street does fantastic coffee, and the guy who owns and runs it is a legend. they also sell their own coffee in a take-home bag - nyom!

Went there for the first time the other day, I was very impressed!

Does anyone remember barneys on Westmorland street? It was replaced by supermacs :(

That was my ideal cafe, friendly and efficient staff, fantastic coffee, comfortable seats and great atmosphere... Not to mention that they sold the best yrgacheffe I've ever had!
    I'm still looking for a replacement :'(

So.....Coffee house owner CUSTOMER pays for product....pays staff....pays for coffee machine....pays VAT...pays rates, insurance and rent ect ect.
After all that there isnt alot left from 1/1.50
Coffee and Tea are LUXURY items.....if your not prepared to pay for them i sugest you stay at home.

Thought I'd correct that there for you. I think that it is quite a common mistaken mindset that a lot of people go into business with.

As said above, espresso should not be hugely expensive, 2 euro max is all I'd be willing to pay.
