    Hi,
Were looking for one that will cover 1 mile to 1.5miles for a site. Are there any particular brands I should be looking at?

What coverage would you be looking to get say 7db, 12db & 15db?

This seems ok. What do you think? http://www.radiolabs.com/products/antennas/2.4gig/11dbomni.php

All told the setup would only use a few watts . A problem you may encounter is a laptop may "see" the base but the base may not "see" the laptop . OSbridge is a brand to avoid , does odd things.
    Have a look around www.wirelessconnect.eu & http://www.wi-pipe.com/24-ghz-c-22.html?antenna=8e139d2e4f5bb121665a14339cc761a0

I'll PM you a few more bits

how do they work ? do you connect them to your router ? do they have their own power source ?

You'd need to connect them to a router ( or AP ) , they are just bigger , weatherproof versions of whats on the back of your router.

An external antenna increases your tx/rx (transmission & reception) strenght. So the answer is yes...

What kind of distance should I expect with the above. Do you have to buy over the phone with a credit card or what?

Distance depends on the direct environment. Lots of buildings, trees, and other obstructions as well as interference from other networks will limit the distance. However to give you an "outside" idea; once while wardiving with this antenna I picked up a signal from node over 15 miles away.
A more realistic estimate would be 1-3 miles when you have clear LOS.

You can just buy online @ http://shop.interline.pl

1-3 miles is perfect. I just ordered that one now.

Don't forget to order the right cable & connectors to attach it to your wireless router...

Oh. Can you tell me what I need to get with it then. It's rj45 into the router.

How would I set it up to receive other networks also?

You do NOT conenct it to an ethernet port.
You basically unscrew/remove the external antenna on your existing router and conenct it to that.
What router do you want to use it with?

Were using just a standard netgear. Should I be looking at a different router?

In the future I would like to think we could connect to other networks should we set them up. Just like I can find other networks with the wireless card in my laptop.

If this works out well I may get one myself in the future aswell for wardriving or something.

I want to get an antenna, does it make any difference what ghz it is, would 2.4 do me, so I guess I need an antenna and a pigtail, would anyone know what pigtail to get for a netopia 2247nwg router, it's the eircom one, can't find any info on what it's antenna connector type is

Off course it matters! If you're router is a 802.11b or G than you need a 2.4 gHZ antenna. You would have to Google to see what connector fits on your router can't recall offhand.

I searched and searched but couldn't find the info, I went and bought a Linksys Wireless-G Business PCI Adapter with RangeBooster http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=334602, the spiel says the range is good and the two big antennas look impressive, it better give me improved signal over my bog standard card, it wasn't cheap, 80 yoyos including postage

Had a quick look at the router there this morning. The aerial did not screw off or anything. I will check on google but do you think that maybe we should be looking at a different router.

It would be nice to have better logging capabilites such as the ability to log data transferred per client etc. and data transferred per network if we decide to setup another one.

    The Netopias aren't great anyway.
I can really recommend the Buffalo WHR-G54S: http://www.atom.ie/index.php?action=item&id=1792&prevaction=search&previd=&prevstart=0
It's a really great router (and very well priced). Stick DD-WRT software on there: http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/index.php and you have top class router.
