Is there any free software for Windows XP that I relative n00b like myself can download to do some rough mixes of recordings that I have? Not looking for anything flashy, just something that can take a number of instruments on separate tracks and allow me to mix them into a single song. I looked in the resources thread but it made my head hurt :(

Haven't used it myself, but as free software goes Reaper is supposed to be pretty good: http://reaper.fm/

Looks like it would suit your needs, might be a bit of a learning curve to it though

[nitpick]It's not free - it's shareware. You are supposed to pay $50 for personal use and $225 for commercial if you end up using it on a regualar basis. They're trusting people to do the right thing, so the software is fully functional with no time restrictions.[/nitpick]

I hope this helps you John..

Have heard of "Computer Music" Magazine?

Each issue comes with a DVD - full of their own free software - synths / drum-machines etc.. They also have tons of samples & tutorials.

Computer Music 119 - has Samplitude 9 SE on the DVD. As far as I know you can record straight into this.. as well as put in Midi and use Audio & plugins etc.. Check it out yourself anyway.

Go to this page for details:
    http://www.computermusic.co.uk/page/computermusic?entry=computer_music_119_samplitude_9

You can also order back issues - so you should be able to get this particcular one with the DVD. I must admit that I have not installed any of them myself(!!) but it seems pretty good if you did not want to spend ANY money. Great for FREE!! Some "Big Playaz" have designed synths / FX for them. Definitely worth checking out.

I have checked the current issue DVD, and it does not have Samplitude. So a back issue would be worth the couple of € it IMO. The Mag has a tutorial in it too, which would be v.handy!!

Here's the stuff from the samplitude w/site - looks v.decent - has pretty much everything you could need:http://www.samplitude.com/eng/sam/se.html

Thanks guys. I downloaded Reaper and it's working fine for me (just a rough mix of something to be done by someone with more talent at a later date).

Another good free one is Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ all you need really need to get started and can handle multiple formats, inputs and more.

But if you want a good DJ program try Virtual DJ http://www.virtualdj.com/download.html (20 day demo) or PCDJ FX http://www.pcdj.co.uk/shop/item.php?id=127 again a demo.
