Anyone care to side on which one is the best for urban crossroads ?

Left Filter lanes let people turn left onto the crossroad and continue left under a flashing yellow or flashing yellow arrow. Handy for the fact that it keeps a portion of traffic moving at all times.

Right Filter Lanes let people turning right have their own queue, allowing traffic turning left and going straight not to be held up with vehicle turning right waiting for a break in the traffic. Handy if there is no "right green arrow" setup on traffic lights.

I have to say that for good traffic flow, Right Filter Lanes are far better. Have seen a lot of the left ones popping up lately though.

Dedicating one as a filter lane reduces the number of lanes allowing traffic to go straight ahead. However, it usually makes more sense to use the right lane the filter lane

This may seem contradictory but I'll have a go at explaining it. The left filter lanes gives priority to traffic that is coming from the opposite direction and turning right, into the same road. The flashing amber or yield sign obliges the left turning traffic to give way to them. At certain junctions, they are very useful at taking that right turning traffic, that could obstruct the flow of traffic, off the main road.
