if you dont need a big car, get yourself a golf, or a 306 hdi.....
They'll both return great mileage and reliabilty

On a budget of €2.5k to €3k your really not going to get much of a diesel car. Maybe an old school diesel early 1990s Merc E Class with inter stellar mileage.

If you can raise your budge by a couple of grand you probably could find something a bit better.

    Peugeot
    Reliabilty???????
    Engine maybe....but the rest???

All diesels at that money have huge miles on them.
    id go for something japanese.
If it were me id spend a little more and get something with less years and miles on it.

You're probaly right, but the OP might get a decent enough (modern diesel!) Peugeot 406 for his budget. There are some high spec (imported from the UK) models around, even with diesel and automatic!

I saw a 1996 318TD up north for about £1.5K, so after VRT ect, it would probably come in around €2.5K...

For the sort of money your talking you'd probably best go up north and get something mid to late 1990's, there's no shortage of diesels up there.... then VRT it...

Theres a mighty fine 2ltr diesel going over in adverts, http://www.adverts.ie/showproduct.php?product=33829
Id say yer man would take 4k for it. ;)

For 2.5-3k id say get yerself a late 90's 1.9 306 or something.
You might get an older corolla for that money.

You'll get a '99 Mazda 626 2.0 TD (105 bhp) for 3-3.5 k. Excellent reliability, good 48-55 mpg depending on your driving style. Well appointed, as the model was not hot in the sales charts, so the GLX is almost standard spec with A/C, ABS, front and side airbags, electric sunroof and all electrics otherwise. The A/C barely touches the mpg on it. The da had one for a few years.

Good, solid car for the money.:) Very comfy and practical, especially in hatchback form. Style is as was typical of late 90s cars, but not ugly.

Ford Mondeo 1.8TD 103000 miles, 2.5k. Great car for the price imo.
