mechanics advice when buying a used car

Is there a service out there where one can hire a mechanic to view a car you would b interested in buying so you can be honestly told if the car is in good nick and mechanicaly sound and worth buying? cheers.

AA have this facility. I'm lucky as my mate does this for me, stopped me from buying some crashed repairs etc.
