Bitter Kilkenny Article

(not sure this was posted here yet!)

    (c) John Cleere - The Kilkenny Advertiser

the bitterness... -The longer I live here in Kilkenny the more I notice how much the Kilkenny lads need to slag off Waterford to make Kilkenny 'great'.
A rag of a paper as well - typical headline "Kilkenny a 'lovely place to live' " or "Local man found in pub" - Quote from Joe Spunk De La Salle (U.T.D.)

TAKE YOUR HANDS OFF OUR GRANNY!
And Kilmacow, Slieverue, Ferrybank and any other points North of the Suir. Yes, they're at it again, the Blaas want to encroach on Kilkenny. It's probably the only place in the world where you can walk down the street with your nose covered in white powder and say 'No, sorry Guard, I wasnt sniffing cocaine, I've just had my head in a bag of floury blaas.'

Ah yes, the capital of the Sunny South East. Don't you just love them? Who wouldn't want to be part of 'the Deise' Just look at what they have to offer:

THE COASTLINE: Best beach in Ireland? Probably Tramore. The only problem is they have been pumping the sewage from Waterford into the bay from the time that I ran into the waters as a child. They still seem astonished that people have abandoned the natural attractions of Tramore, Bunmahon and Dunmore East for Spain, Greece or Portugal where the basics, such as clean water, are important. What is it? 70 plus miles of coastline and how many Blue Flag beaches? Two, the same number as Westmeath, which, the last time I looked, is an inland county. Sorry Mossy, I’m afraid Kilkenny people are not prepared to prop up the Waterford economy by holidaying and swimming in the filthy waters, or, to borrow a phrase from Brendan Behan, ‘going through the motions.’ THE AIRPORT: What genius or, I presume, political lackey got the bright idea to build an airport on top of a hill that any local farmer could have advised them was regularly fogbound? Fair dues to the land owner who sold them the site, it wasn't up to him to point out the problems. What should have been a huge plus for the area, ie the whole south-east, is irrelevant. Most of Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford don't even realise there is an airport in the region. By the way, I have used the airport. On the morning I was there only three flights departed, but they still managed to mix the passengers up, with people heading for L’Orient, Birmingham and Luton all ending up on the same aircraft. Probably too many large bottles the night before was to blame, which brings me on to the next subject:

WATERFORD AND IT'S LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE LARGE BOTTLE. Come on, I don't care how discreet ye want to be. A feed of large bottles equates to only one thing - flatulence, that means wind, Mossy. I put up with the discomfort in the past and took it on the chin, or on the nose more likely. It's an environmental issue now. I reckon the Waterford crowd, with their reckless drinking habits, are responsible for any hole in the ozone layer over the Sunny South East.

WATERFORD GLASS: 3,000 employees a few years ago, now down to about 500. To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, ‘To lose one job may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose 2,500 looks like carelessness.’ I wonder have the losses anything to do with the fact they paid themselves wages that would make Bertie Ahern blush? All for blowing a bit of glass. As Carlsberg might say, ‘Probably the most expensive blow job in the world.’ Still they have all got their big redundancy payments and feck the next generation.

BRENDAN BOWYER: 'I ran all the way home' Brendan used to try and sing. I don't blame him, even back in the 50s Waterford was a dodgy spot. What a voice! Is it true they play his records in the glass factory to make sure the glass is shatter proof?

WATERFORD'S CONTRIBUTION TO ARTS AND CULTURE:

WATERFORD HURLERS: Have you seen all those cheap jewellery sellers around the square in the city centre? They tell me their best seller is The choker, I'm not surprised. The only All-Ireland success I can recall Waterford having since the fifties was in 3rd level colleges competitions, powered by Kilkenny and Wexford chaps, naturally.

THE WATERFORD/KILKENNY ROAD: There’s method in our madness here, of course. It's the worst in Ireland and a nightmare to drive on, but it keeps the Waterford crowd on their own side of the bridge and lets us get on with looking after the better class of tourist.

WATERFORD UNITED FC: They've been knocking around since 1930 and they still haven't managed to put together the deposit for a mortgage on a ground of their own. It used to be Kilcohan Park greyhound track, now they're squatting out at the municipal sports ground. Back in the early seventies they drew both Man United and Celtic in the European Cup. The games packed Lansdowne Road, but none of the money was used to buy a couple of acres of land at the time. Where did it all go and is it too late to have a tribunal?

MARTIN CULLEN: I know he is still Minister for something or other, what it is. I'm not too sure. Bertie has obviously stuck him where he can do the least amount of damage. What a record! Sold off Aer Lingus, (I'm sure the crowd in Shannon love him for that), let the builders and property off on their commitments to provide 20 per cent social housing and, best of all, 60 million spent on electronic voting machines. Maybe he could have them adapted and set up in the amusement arcades along the seafront in Tramore.

No, Granny is happy to stay put, she doesn't mind popping in to visit the neighbours, but she has no intention of getting in to bed with them at this stage of her life. That goes for the rest of south Kilkenny as well.

I'm cringing just reading that!! I'm embaressed for Kk people but don't think that guy is a hardcore journalist (evidently).
The airport thing is prob the worst opinion, along with the road statement. He must not be aware a motorway is well under constructon between the two.

I dunno, all I can say is the man clearly hasn't a clue baout regional development and defo doesn't rep the opinion of the vast majority of us cars.
All i can hope is he meant it in a kind of tongue and cheek manner...

I'm fairly sure a lot of those WD glass workers are from KK so kid of pathetic to see him slag them off too

I don't think anyone considers that a real paper anyway.

Yeah that is pretty pathetic all right, I don't think this guy speaks for most kk people, certainly not me anyway.

Obviously has his head stuck up his arse about the whole region, this kind of sniping and tit for tat small minded crap from both sides is so pointless and incredibly tedious.

Can we send in a letter to the paper or is it a tabloid?

Christ, how can you label an entire on the rantings of one solitary journalist in a local rag?

And on the subject - who was it that dug up a 2 year old thread just to state KK is a town?

Why? Maybe because nothing in the OPs post says that every single Kilkenny resident got together and pitched in to come up with this article. The journalist is a twat, dont label all Kilkenny people according to this fool's words.

Well the previous post was in 2005, so thats what we call on boards "digging up" a thread. Anyway the thread had nothing to do with the point you made, and thats called "flaming". I'd advise you to learn some netiquette, and we'll all get along fine.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 24 wellboy1976

    Netiquette!!!!

I should have started a new thread so, just stating fact, Mr Cleere has really annoyed me. I come onto these boards from the ones I normally go on and see the title of the board "Kilkenny City"!

Im very confused.. this was posted yesterday. Whats all this about 2005?

    Topic Title changed..

I think John Cleere would have written this article tongue in cheek. He has a good sense of humour (his weekly columm is usually very light hearted) and I would imagine that the article started in jest.
However I do think he went too far with it. It's actually deeply offensive and poor form to slag off his county neighbours in such a public forum.
    :(

what an absolutely ridiculous article to write, he's obviously just trying to get a reaction out of people so that they might read his rag in future.

it's embarassing for kilkenny people to read that, you begin to wonder if people will think this man's bitterness is the way all kilkenny feel.

but worst of all, if it is meant to be tongue in cheek, just to get a reaction, it's not one bit funny!

How true. But, unfortunately, this mentality IS representative of a large portion of the population of South KK - the majority of whom earn their living, educate their childre, and owe their day-to-day existence to Waterford. And to think that a public representative from that County labelled Waterford people as Nazis.

NO SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE LADS. JUST PROVES THE CASE.

The same kind of ****e also comes from Waterford people against KK people. And frankly I am sick of it from both sides.

I have to agree with Kahless. Anti Waterford and Anti Kilkenny topics are old and tiring. Just ignore stupid comments and stupid articles.

Ill lock this up, as its going to turn into a bitch fest between the two.
