Just curious to what are you peoples favourite lyrics and song?

Mine at the moment are from Born in the USA

"I had a brother at Khe Sanh, fighting off the Viet Cong, their still there but he's all gone."

Didnt sound particularly special till I heard him sing it solo and acoustic

From the same guy interestingly - 'And my clothes don't fit me no more' (Streets of Philadelphia) - I've always thought that was a particularly touching lyric.:(

Keeping up the Springsteen trend my favorite would be "Is a dream a lie if it don't come true, or is it something worse?"

"La la la, la la la la, la la la..."

It's like an updated version of Desolation Row.

It's a song by Bob Dylan which can be found on his wonderful Highway 61 Revisited album. Lyrics here.

"You are my centre as I spin away" - Thom Yorke, Videotape. (The whole song is amazingly written, but that line in particular really does it for me).

"'Taint no sin to take off your skin and dance around in your bones" - William Burroughs.

"I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now" - Bob Dylan

"We'll cross that bridge after it's gone, after we're way past it" - Bob Dylan

"There's a gap in between, there's a gap where we meet. Where I end and you begin" - Thom Yorke

    .....

    That's enough for now.

On the Springsteen theme (I got my ticket \o/)

Fat man sitting on a little stool, takes the money from my hand while his eyes take a walk all over you

    Others include
Those were days of roses, poetry and prose, when all I had was you and all you had was me, there were no tomorrows, we packed away our sorrows and we saved them for a rainy day. - Martha Tom Waits

I sing the song because I love the man I know that some of you don't understand Milk-blood to keep from running out. I've seen the needle and the damage done A little part of it in everyone But every junkie's like a settin' sun. Neil Young Needle and the Damage Done

The photograph on the dashboard, taken years ago,Turned around backwards so the windshield shows.Every streetlight reveals the picture in reverse. REM Nightswimming

Came across this beaut in an old Northern soul song the other week (can't remember the name of it now):

"She took back her love, if that's what she call it
She messed you around, left you an alcoholic"

Didn't Cathy Dennis write that song? Or was the old "Change a word, take a third" rule invoked on songwriting credits.

It takes a sweet little bullet, from a pretty blue gun, to put those scarlet ribbons in your hair.

Small change got rained on with his own .38

I'm gonna whittle you into kindling.

    Tom Waits.

Dunno about favorite, but this line in Funky Cold Medina (when he discovers his date is a man) always made me laugh:

"ain't no plans with a man,
this is the 80s and I'm down the ladies"

    Otherwise it's probably

"So, hand in glove I stake my claim
I'll fight to the last breath

If they dare touch a hair on your head
I'll fight to the last breath"

    or

"Oh God save history God save your mad parade"

although with the latter, I always invested it with the cooler meaning of a 'mad parade' of dubiously "historical" figures, until I realized he probably just meant the Jubilee parade.

"Like a castle in it's corner in a medi-evil game,

I foresee terrible trouble and I stay here just the same."

    Steely Dan - "Dirty Work"

To "lucyburn" : Music is not your strong point is it ? :p

she did. along with Rob Gretton from Mudd. And while we're at it...Whole Again by Atomic Kitten was mainly the fault of Andy McClusky from Orchestral Manouvres in the Dark...

oh - and lucyburn...there's nothing wrong with asking questions here'n'stuff, but you ought to try and look some stuff up yerself once in a while. for instance.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desolation_row

Television Personalities - A sense of belonging

"You laugh and make jokes about what you will do

And if you think it's funny now, wait 'til the bomb goes off
    You'll be in ****ing hysterics"

...in keeping with boss theme (i got tix too!)

"well my daddy he was just a stranger
lived in a hotel down town
when i was a kid he was just somebody
    -somebody i'd see around.
Now down below and pullin' on my shirt
I got some kids of my own
Well if I had one wish in this god forsaken world, kids
It'd be that your mistakes would be your own
Yea your sins would be your own". -bruce springsteen

"I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel
you were famous, your heart was a legend.
You told me again you preferred handsome men
but for me you would make an exception."-Leonard Cohen

    "For reasons I cannot explain
Theres some part of me wants to see
    Graceland.
And I may be obliged to defend
    Every love, every ending,
Or maybe theres no obligations now"-Paul Simon

"step out the front foor, like a ghost into a fog,
where no one notices the contrast of white on white.
and in between the moon and you, the angels get a better view,
of the crumbling difference between wrong and right"-adam duritz

At the moment, my favourite line is from Eels - Hey Man (Now You're Really Living)

Do you know what it's like to care too much
'Bout someone you're never going to get to touch
Hey man, now you're really living.

Is it not snappers? As in the little birds? Seem to recall an interview and he was asked what snipers he was referring to and he just laughed...

It's too late to trawl through my mountain of magazines...

Thanks! I'd never heard that version. I didn't realise that Burroughs and Waits' version was a cover too. Was written by a Walter Donaldson in '29.

And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
    Has given you the call

White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane - Amazing song

    With your bitch slap rappin'
    And your cocaine tongue
    You get nuthin' done

Guns n Roses - You Could Be Mine - What a great line (no pun intended)
