Firstly I wouldn't have known that you were a girl.
Still, tell your mammy or daddy (I presume you are too young to be driving) that this can be done by many alarm outfitters, auto electricians or by some mechanics (or even DIY but being a girl you wouldn't know anything about that!). The parts can IIRC be got from GSF (www.gsfcarparts.com) in Dublin

Have a look on eBay, there are always aftermarket RCL kits for sale up there. If you are handy with car electrics you could fit it yourself or get an auto sparky to fit it.

Just be aware though that it can be harder to retro fit these kits in some cars than others. Totally depends on the car.

Depends on if the car has central locking or not

If its does its relatively easy to fit up an alarm to utilise the central locking

If not its a pain in the arse to fit an actuator on all the doors plus the control box and route all the wires

The point is that txt spk shows disrespect for other users. Before posting here again, read the charter please, C_Breeze and lil-smurf...

if your car already has central locking (and not remote central locking) then you acn buy a CL kit on ebay and it just connects to the negative triggers on your original central locking, if you dont have CL at all then you have to buy a kit with the motors that push and pull the door pins to open the locks,., its not really a difficult job but it would require a little know how and confidence in taking parts off of the car.,

if you already have central locking you'll need something like this,
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Car-Remote-Central-Locking-Kit-HT-188-Control-Keyless_W0QQitemZ200175872969QQihZ010QQcategoryZ15329QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

If you dont have central locking at al you'll need something like this,
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Remote-Central-Locking-Kit-keyless-4dr-2dr-all-cars_W0QQitemZ180183015581QQihZ008QQcategoryZ75329QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

these can also be bought in maplin electronics.,

Hey vtec - you seem to know your stuff about this.

How about if the car already has Central Locking AND an aftermarket alarm installed but doesnt have Remote C/L

    ... what would you recommend??

Edit: I stand corrected - Point taken Unkel

    vtec...good information there.
My Golf HAS CL already. So I presume the kit in the first link would work?
Big job to install it? Would any mechanic worth his salt be able to do this, or maybe you could recommend someone? If you could do it yourself id pay you a fair price.

    thanks

yes kaizer the first one would do, its not difficult to do and most decent mechanics should have it dont for you in 20-30 mins., I dont really have the time to do them anymore, i used to fit alarms and CL kits, phone kits etc.,

C Breeze, the chances are your alarm might have the remote CL function, if you find out the model number and google it you'll know, if it does then its just not been hooked up to the original CL, if its really old alarm (or a really cheap argos kinda one) then it probably wont have CL.,

The first link he posted should work. Bit more complicated if you have an alarm installed because you'd need to keep both fobs handy, one to open the doors and the other to turn off the alarm.

Check with the alarm manufacturer or the guy who fitted it, they may do an optional kit for the alarm that also does the central locking

Hmmm the the alarm was on the car already when i bough it in the UK . Its a "Sterling" alarm made by "toad" i'm lead to believe - but i dont know the exact serial number because the sticker has peeled off the back of the fob.

Ah i wouldnt want to be carrying 2 fobs around with me - is there not way the Kit could be spliced into my existing fob or the alarm to be spliced into the Kits fob or am i just talkin rubbish?

Unless you have that teleportation machine he had in "The Fly" and you want to create some sort of a mutant remote .. no :)

I think thats the one you have, double check on the alarm box under the bonnet. Looks like it already has the feature on it, just whoever fitted it didn't set it up for some reason.

look on the siren under the bonnet for a serial number and if its not there trace the wiring back through the bulkhead and you should find the control module there., if its not ancient then chances are it sould support it.,
The first link he posted should work. Bit more complicated if you have an alarm installed because you'd need to keep both fobs handy, one to open the doors and the other to turn off the alarm.

you dont actually need both fobs, you can kep the alarm one and use for the locking but the reason i didnt post that first time round is that its much more complex and not really for someone who hasnt done it before, theres a modul you can get that can open and lock your doors when it gets a signal from the indicators (you know when you arm it usually flashes twice and once for disarm or whatever depending on the alarm).,

craichoe - yeah thats the one alright! (except its dark green - so i dont know whether that signifies if it an older model or not)

I though it would be possible to hard wire the R/CL kit into the alarm (splice it into the wires maybe  ) and then whenever i arm/disarm it locks/unlcoks accordingly . Anyway thanks for the info craichoe & vtec

Maybe i should go see an auto electrician at the weekend ... or maybe stop being so lazy and lock/unlock using the key!!

    Be careful...
Unless this is a FF alarm they are notorious for trouble down the line... If you retrofit another system into it you could be facing all sorts... Thats why most garages will not guarentee the alarm when selling a s-hand car.

If your really keen, bring it to an auto electric specialist to get it sorted... is it really worth it ??

best place to start is to identify the model of alarm you have, it could be a simple case of just connecting the wires.,

  • Registered Users Posts: 602 ✭✭✭masseyno9

Just wondering (not worth a new thread) how much i'd be looking at for an alarm to be fitted? Would i be better off to buy an alarm on ebay and get it fitted separately, or just go to an auto-electrics place and buy it and have it fitted there? Also want it wired into my central locking, but i presume thats a pretty standard feature these days.

a lot of people wont fit it unless you buy it from them, best bet is to call around a few places for quotes.,
