This is a few pics from when i painted the slide on my G18c, it will explain the basics of painting technique and what to use etc,

First you have to strip down the gun and remove any parts that are not going to be painted, this will help to get a much better finish, when you have all the parts ready for paint you will need to key them by rubbing them down with sand paper, P600 wet&dry will be perfect or use a scotch pad like i did. you can see how dull the plastic looks in the pic where it has been sanded,

Make sure the stuff is clean and theres no grease or anything on it and mask up the parts that you dont want painted, i have the ejection port masked up here so that it stays black, (Note: i painted it with satin black before masking,)

this is the a scotch pad used to key the surface of the plastic before it gets primered. if you dont do this step then its very likely that the paint will fall off.

Now once its clean and dry you can apply the plastic primer, this stuff is usually clear and its very easy to get drips on the piece your painting, its not a big problem though just make sure everything is covered because when its dry you can flat sad it with P800-P1000 and give it another light coat if needed.
after the plastic primer i gave it a couple of coats of white 2pack primer, this means you dont need as much silver paint to cover the dark plastic and the primer also acts as a filler for small imperfections in the plastic, this was the first coat,

when the primer is done and dried you can flat sand it with P1000 wet&dry sandpaper. This will give the piece a really smooth feel and a ferfect base for the silver (or whatever colour) paint.
this was the first coat of silver,

Do it in about 2-3 coats being careful not to over do it and make it drip then after you have it covered nicely and cant see anymore of the primer your ready for the laquer stage, dont flat sand at this stage.
this was the last coat of paint,

looks nice and metalic at this stage with a coat of laquer on it, note that the finger print is on the masking, not the paint,:p

at this stage you would want to leave the piece to dry fully before removing the masking as it might take some of the paint with it,
you can laquer it a few times and then flat sand it with P2000 and a rub down with polish to give it a really shiney, glossy kinda of finish,
I didnt bother with that stage because i wanted it to more of a metal look.,

heres a few pics of it finished,

i cant remember what brand the primer was but the silver paint wasa honda colour match aerosol from a paint specialist,. The brand doesnt make any difference though, you'll get everything you need in halfords or other motor factors., :)
