Most fuel efficient commuting car for under €10k?

Primarily for commuting/city driving, ie one person. Am thinking Honda Insight meself, only one I was ever in had averaged 75mpg over its 16000 mile city driving history in London (tho it did do 97mpg on a 40 mile run on the M4).

Am interested in alternatives, and despite the sig also interested in diesel.

How about an Audi A2 diesel? - supposedly gets over 80 mpg extra-urban. Only problem is maintenance as the engine bay is sealed but it'd be a good little creuiser. The UK should have a good choice of well maintained cars. Here's a (not particularly good) example:

Despite the fact that "Aygo by Toyota" is an anagram of "A gay booty toy" it'll do great mpg, will only cost 151 to tax and is low on CO2. it'll also have a chunk of warranty left... depends on what type of commuting you're doing I suppose!

Some good suggestions there, some crap ones. Whoever suggested the Smart For Two (gays, I presume).. would you drive one!?

So far we have (mpg figures from Parkers):
1.0 Honda Insight (83mpg). Two seats. Looks like the future did in the 90s.
1.3D Panda (65mpg). Would be a lot better tho if it was any other make other than Fiat. Maybe a same-engined Corsa, but not for under 10k.
1.4D A2 (64mpg). Sealed engine bay? That doesn't sound good. Also just a bit too gay.
1.0 Aygo (61mpg). Can these be got for under 10k so soon. Girly tho?

For completeness the ForTwo does 61mpg.

Come on lads, there has to be something that can come close to the Insight and not get me beaten up when I'm seen in it.

Isn't there an Aygo 1.4 HDi sold in the UK but not here. It's even more economical than the 1.0 but I don't know if you'd get one imported and registered for 10k

A regular polo 1.4 TDI makes more sense though. Getting any of these under 10K is going to be tough unless its got a lot of miles.

AFAIK the 1.4 PSA/Ford diesel in the Aygo is only 55bhp, as opposed to the 90bhp a new model Yaris D-4D gets.

Hows about an old model Yaris 1.4 D-4D (75bhp unit that used to be fitted to the MINI), They're quite nipppy, and fantastic on fuel. We had a van version and it was infinately better to drive than a petrol model. with 123lb/ft of torque it doesn't require as many downchanges.

Consumption figures:
(Urban) 55.4mpg / (extra urban) 76.3mpg / (combined) 67.3mpg

I think thats a good point. If you pick the right engine you can have a car with enough torque and poke to make driving easier. People are always moaning about overtaking, but personally I rarely't do that as I mainly drive around the city. But a little extra torque can make all the difference in darting in and out of traffic when commuting.

The Insight is a gay looking car if ever there was IMO. As gay looking as a Smart car at least.

Now back on topic, JHMEG could have if he was prepared to get an LHD car, the Seat Arosa, VW Lupo, and Audi A2 were all available as 3 litre versions, so called because their average fuel consumption was 3 l/100 km or 94.5 mpg on the combined cycle. No other car has ever come close to it. That has to be the ultimate eco car. Of course they are as rare as hens teeth, but they surley would come in under the €10k budget if you could find one.
