    The purpose of customs duty is to protect Irish owned businesses from cheap imports from other countries that don't have the same cost structures as we do.

    You may think it's unfair, but so would the local businessman who has to compete with these imports without the economies of scale that large US distributors have.

    As far as I can make out, pm's scope attracted 4.2% duty and 21% VAT. He still came out ahead of the game.
