Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

On my vista laptop an error keeps coming up saying something like COM SURROGATE PROBLEM and windows needs to close. Does anybody else have this issue? Is it something to do with vista and the divx codecs not being compatible?

On my XP laptop everything seems to be fine for a few minutes and then an error comes up saying WMP11 needs to shut down and if I want a report. Very annoying :(

Both of your problems are related I think to currupt media files and/or incompatible codecs.

Try disabling the thumbnail view in your folders and see if that works and updating to the latest codecs.

thanks =|.Murderer.| i have downloaded the most recent codecs. Vista is a b1tch anyway so I'm not going to stream from this. XP should be alot more stable :) probably a corrupted file somewhere. Where to find that though in a 500GB external HDD :D

My only advice would be to share one folder at a time until you get it to crash. Or you could share a few gigs at once and when it crashes you'd know which area to concentrate on.

thanks m8, will try that when I get home ;)

Pity it doesn't play .mkv files, that would have been sweet:(

right I got the update & divx works fine from cd/dvd media and a usb key, but will divx work with the media centre extender? what portable h/d can I use? I tried two already but they would not initialize with the 360.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 8,766 Mod ✭✭✭✭mossym

won't work with the extender. have to use the dashboard itself.

The HDD needs to be formatted using FAT32 unfortunately.

You can download the update from here and burn it to a cd.

New games will have the update eventually. But it'll probably be at least a month or so.

Only reason ms is doing this is cuz sony are and the only reason they are is due to home and they then worked out H.264/MPEG-4 AVC will take too long for the machine to encode and send, divx is faster encode times.

But as for the 360 can it not use H.264 way better than divx or xvid for the same size.

    yea H.264 you rock

finaly most pirates stuff is in xvid(free) not divx(legaly not free)

Microsoft also have millions invested into their own proprietary formats. Now that it's become clear that they can't sway the masses to use them, they've had no choice but to support DivX.

Regarding DivX having faster encode times, this is true, but no longer must we transcode our videos on the fly using programmes like TVersity so I don't really understand what point you're trying to make.

Finally, the reason why XviD is perceived as being the stuff of pirates is because XviD is actually more efficient than DivX. Go back a few years and the majority of released files would have been encoded with DivX.

    Thanks for your insight though...

    i've got a 4gb usb key, fat32 formated.
i've copied a divx avi onto the root directory on the usb.

any idea will the 360 play it?
or am i don't something stupid?

if i browse through the video menu, and try to change source, the usb option is greyed out.

    any ideas?

    thanks,
    MiCr0

Just to note that I have succesfully played Hi-def Xvid with 5.1 AC3 on an Xbox 360.

    Ultimate.Factory.Ferrari.HDTV.xvid.720p

Some Hi-def files will not however play

This has got to be the best update ever!

Am currently watching Casino Royale on my XBox 360 in Hi Def streaming from my PC.

    No more TVersity, MCE Encoder.

    Happy days.

    Thank you Microsoft.

    Beats me...
You could try creating a folder on the memory stick and moving the video into that, and maybe try sticking more than 1 video on there just in case it's ignoring the other one due to a dodgy encoder being used...

Used mine for watching a load of porn on a memory stick earlier (for testing purposes of course...)
    damn handy update:)
