Best allround Ipod type device?

I know "best" is vague but its not neccesarily the best amount of storage, amount of features, is it user-friendly or good value im looking for its a combination of this and more that i want to take into account. Ive very little experience with Ipods as unlike most people i know ive never owned one and therefore dont know what is the most important feature to look for. but this one is being bought as a christmass present and i could use some advice also it doesent neccesarily have to be an Ipod as ive heard that ties you down to having to use Itunes etc. any suggestions?
