Basically I just want to know if the Ipod touch will work in hotels or when Im away from home. Like to be able to view www.boards.ie and my fantasy football team on www.fantasy-preimierleague.com etc. Maybe check my emails. Thanks.

From what I can tell, you connect to a wireless network just like with a PC. Check out the product demo link I posted earlier, I'm sure it will clarify it.

Well I got back through customs without a bother, they didn't stop anyone I saw :) Though even if I had been stopped I wouldn't have been too annoyed, still cheaper than here.

Does anyone know of an application out there of adding an FM radio to an ipod touch? I was hoping after jailbrreaking it there would be a way of doing this?

The only one I've found is the iRadio app and technically its not radio, its like shoutcast, internet radio, and you need wifi on for it to work.

Yeah it should work in hotels :) but you may need to pay for you wifi :(

I've just been informed that my son wants the itouch for Christmas...just a quick question...can you upload your own music onto it? Anything I've read seems to say you have to buy it off itunes. I'm probably missing something but would like to know for sure before I fork out for one. Seems I'm too late to go the US or even UK route to get a good deal...oh well.
Yes don't worry about that...if your son has cd's or movies or whatever else, they can all be uploaded to itunes for the touch. Its just like the rest of them just the ipod touch is a looot better .Theres a lot of stuff to be done on the touch like jailbreaking it or whatever else but if you don't want to void your warranty i wouldnt recommend it.

Actually you can restore your ipod to its original state at any time, by putting it in restore mode then using itunes to restore to the original firmware.
From doing plenty of research it looks pretty impossible to brick it (if even possible). Your warranty will be fine once you can restore it, but you would lose all content you have on the ipod and have to re-copy it all.

I'm delighted I went for the touch. I was thinking about the archos 604 and the zune80 but once I did the research and played with the ipod I had to get it :)

I just got a 16gb touch from the states and its savage, i jailbreaked it straight away. Brilliant machine, hav a few questions though.

Having some trouble loading the iphone apps, mail, weather, stocks, maps.... Was hoping someone could shine a light i tried to copy the youtube video the ipodtouchmaster provided but it wouldnt work for me?

I wouldnt dare ask how too put a movie on an ipod but its driving me nuts i have dvd drive and all that ive gone through the FAQ downloaded programmes and nothing will get vids into itunes. Put the dvd in the drive.... one program to rip one to convert one to sync.

Except for some reason i now have Batman begins, bryan and experience in that folder. Dont know where ny of them came from.

PM me your email and i'll send it to you :)

    @Deedsie

When you jailbreak are you back to 1.1.2?
    I used the installer.
You need to install the preps for the apps first from the installer.

For movies I use videora ipod touch converter, its free and works great.

    I've been reading this review...

    http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/apple/apple-ipod-touch-review-verdict-good-in-the-face-of-greatness-300127.php

What are the cons of using it for internet?

The touch screen and the size of the writing.
When I do the zoom thing (move fingers apart) to make the writing bigger, I always end up clicking on an ad or something else. The touch screen is great but so much stuff on the net only need one click so this is a pain on the touch. I also tend to stay away from the forums on it, pain to navigate.

In fairness though its pretty sweet still. I'm very happy I got it.
The mail app is great too, I use my gmail and they have IMAP on gmail now so it means my account is up to date on both devices no matter which one I use :)

Was thinking of getting one of these myself, looks really good. What is the quality like on the video? I presume I can load movies and tv shows that I have on my pc onto it,yes? Would they look good on it?

Also I must ask the super-noob question when it comes to tech stuff, because my head just melts around this stuff...what exactly is jailbreaking? what does it do to the ipod? *hangs head in embarrasment*

    Cheers :)

Yes, but I doubt iPods support avi divx codecs yet, I'd say movies will need to be converted to mp4.

I think it allows 3rd party applications to be installed.

I'm sorely tempted as well, my only problem is the capacity. When shelling out that type of cash, I'd expect to be able to store all my music plus a good few videos. 16 GB is a little miserly in this respect.

it is easy to convert them though,ye?

And I also agree with the capacity,it is a bit small for that kind of money, but personally I would never use that amount on music anyway, video on the other hand would take up a bit.

I don't know if iTunes converts automatically, but if not, I'm sure there are a load of free converters out there.

it's a cool piece of kit alright but I still hate converting vids and i-tunes.... this is for the Wife... If they had more codecs like my zen I would get one myself and eat my words about fruit machines!

have to convert all vids to mp4, itunes doesnt do this automatically but you
can download videora for free to convert or buy dvdfab platinum, with this you can rip your boxsets episode by episode and stick it on your itouch

Yeah, it's ok for a few clips now and again but it gets extremely annoying, rather quickly :P
No problems with the touch anyway dude?

loads of problems... must be faulty?? wont allow me to play my xvids and avi files.... wont allow me to drag and drop..... have to use a special software to get it to work

Apart from that it's perfect ;) many thanks for your excellent service.... I'm sure I'll have to get used to it and I can see me doing all the converting etc etc

As a matter of interest I see a baner add on your site for invisible shield.... it's a US link... I think the touch coud benifit from one.... so do I just order one from the US or is ther somewhere over her do you know?

They're not really necessary for the touch, the glass screen is quite scratch proof(however, the chrome backplate is like butter :D )... I've seen video clips of people rubbing their keys on the screen and it remaining unharmed....

Anyhoo, invisible shield are great... free worldwide delivery and a "lifetime" guaranty...although, there are cheaper options, such as best skinsever

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,201 ✭✭✭Macspower

    thanks Mactard.... skin(s) ordered......

Well, just made the plunge on ebay. Just under 300 shipped, so not an absolute bargain but still a good bit cheaper than the 2nd hand ones here.

I know - it's incredible that you can save €100 so easily by going to the UK, and more again if you risk the customs from the US.

    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore

apple's retail prices are static across their webstore and retail outlets.

you will find it difficult to find a shop over there that will undercut the apple store prices.

    $299 for 8gb
    $399 for 16gb

with the dollar being so weak i'll be getting an iphone for $399 which works out at like 270 euros.

Would definitely suggest the iPod Touch. I got one for Christmas and I'm very impresses to say the least. Not only is it good for music and videos, it is also great for using the Internet via wifi (I'm typing this post on the iPod Touch right now as I'm listening to Rihanna's Please Don't Stop the Music). If they're cheaper during the sales I'd say get one
