You and I have an almost identical approach to buying cars, although I do apply the list I posted to a forecourt of second-hand cars.
What are you talking about?? He says he'd never choose a car based on the badge, whereas you say you 'wouldn't under any circumstances, give real consideration to buying a car from...'

So that pretty much just leaves the car you currently own, by the looks of things either an Alfa or a Honda.

So the brand you now is the best brand availale and the rest of us are eejits.

    Good thread:rolleyes:

I never called anyone an eejit. And you're missing the point of the thread completely.

I think it has potential to be a good thread. I just need the killjoys to steer clear and people to not take it as doctrine.

I'm saying that, apart from his openness to any marque, we buy second-hand cars in a similar manner.

    Please read before reacting.

    Well ...I certainly wouldn't buy a "Chevrolet".

Just for the name. A tired old Daewoo, based on the last generation GM platform, re-branded as Chevrolet ...who are they kidding?

Have you seen the "all American" ads for them?

That's the one brand of car I'd really be too embarrassed to be seen in or near

I’m a technilogoy – safty - emmisions fan. I like modern things and I think anything over 5 years old is ugly.

The marques I dislike most are VW and BMW due to their blandness and commonness, even new ones look old.

    Cars you’de be surprised I like ...
    The new Corsa
    The Fiat 500
New Mazda 2 and Mazda 6
    Merc S-Class
    Audi A5

    Ughh, I left out Chevvy.

Maybe Americans should just stop making cars? Apart from the Mustang and Pontiacs.

The Mazda 6 is a beauty. I'll assume you are talking about the very latest model. It looks very well finished on the inside, clean and elegant. The S-Class is very good looking and engines, well, extremely smooth and powerful. The one ugly one they had was the boxy looking one that was around from the early nineties to end of that decade. Then again, that car is not even on your radar dud to how old it is!

I have to admit the A5 is a lovely car. I know the marque is on my list, but the A5 is completely impractical for me in any case.

    really?

so whats going to take the place of Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Fiat, Abarth, and Pagani? the VW Golf GTPDTDPGTDDDII??

    Bo11ox to that!! :D

Renault - previous experience with very poor reliability. Heard from many other dealers its common.

Peugeot/Citroen - would avoid unless cheap , same reason as renault.

    I'd give anything a chance.
Kia/Hyundai arent built for people who know the difference between oversteer and understeer - people need a tool to get from A to B and this fits it.

I saw that a while back, really got me smiling. Can buy a six year old car for €6,000, just as good as a new one, and the first owner paid the €35,000 depreciation.

Hitler never drove anything ...he was chauffeured around (in Mercs mostly)

Because ...the Fuehrer had no Fuehrerschein (driving licence)

Muscle cars are a slightly different breed.

I know very little about Chevvys apart from the fact that they are vulgar.

No he did not. He set-up VW, the company, so that ordinary citizens would have access to an affordable, reliable means of transport. "The Peoples' Car".

    EDIT - Beaten by Peasant.

No car is perfect, all will have at least one thing that you don't like.

Simply list the carmakers that you will not, under any circumstances, give real consideration to buying a car from. List a reason if you wish.

One thing I am specifically leaving out of my list is super-carmakers and dedicated sports marques. Include these if you wish.

    Ford: RS2000 Mexico, RS200, Cossie.

Nissan: R32, R33 and R34 Skyline GTR's, 350Z, to name a few. New GTR also.

    Opel: Manta 400 anyone?

BMW: Any M car, E30 325i, 2002 Turbo for innovation, etc

    Citroen: DS

    Peugeot: 205 Gti, 106 gti, 205 T16, 405 coupe T16, 306 GTi-6

    Audi: Quattro S1 coupe, RS2, mk2 RS4, new RS6

    Hyundai: Upcoming 300bhp rwd coupe...

Toyota: Supra twin turbo, MR2 turbo, GT4, AE86 good in it's time

Kia: 7 year warranty does not convince. (It doesn't have to, buy one and worry not for 7 years!)

Land Rover: Defender - does what it's supposed to do very well.

Suzuki: Yet to come across a car well put together. GSXR anyone?

    Daihatsu:

FIAT: 131 Abarth. Invented many things that other car makers copied.

    Lexus: Toyota part's bin hand-me-downs, with a premium. LS450 a Toyota hand-me-down?

Mitsubishi: Nothing of note. Evo anyone?!? :)

Judging only by the badge is narrow minded. A real car enthusiast would look past the badge.

I notice the plethora of hot-hatches and sportscars in your list.

I wonder do you like them with go-faster stripes, or without?

And what, pray tell, do stripes have to do with anything?
Do you think that my list of cars are bad?

This is a realy silly thread...........

Anyone who wont buy a car cos of its make (must run into the hundreds and hundreds of model variations) is not a car enthusiast.
Everyone has one or two they wont buy....but a list that long????????

If I am not a car enthusiast, are you implying that I am not entitled to post in this sub-forum? If I am not a car enthusiast, can an opinion not be expressed?

These childish jibes are just plain ridiculous at this stage. You'd almost think that qualified, certified mechanics are the only ones allowed to post here.

Yes...of course an opinion can be expressed.

Coming into a thread and making off topic, and incorrect, remarks while not actually discussing the point of the thread is very lame.

Using the excuse of "I expressed my opinion" to back this up is even lamer.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,313 ✭✭✭Mr.Boots

    Ok...i shall discuss the point....

You have picked a broad range of makes....my guess is you havnt driven ANY of them, if you had you wouldnt have this opinion.
One thing i cant undersatnd....How could anyone call a Rolls Royce "brutish"

There's not much wrong with Hyundai as an A to B car from where I see it, I've sold loads of them over the years and they give little or no trouble and they're great value for the price. What car do you drive OP? Marques I don't buy: Opel: overpriced, bland, crazy parts prices, unreliable.
    Renault: depreciation, dodgy electrics, fallapartability.
    Alfa: depreciation, dodgy electrics, over-rated.
VW: sh*te componants, poor build quality, unreliable.
    Mercedes: over-rated, overpriced, unreliable.

Ford: big car, built for 3 year olds.

What exactly is the point of this thread when you are making silly contradictions like the above, you have posted a ridiculous thread in the motors forum which is populated by people who are interested in motors, what response were you hoping for exactly sensible people don't discredit 95% of all cars available to buy in ireland just because of the badge, by your own admission you would not drive the following cars based purely on the badge on the bonnet

    Audi R8

    Toyota supra

    nissan 350z

    fiat punto abarth

    mitsubishi evo

as you can see by the above this thread is irrelevant to motor fans as your opinion is ridiculously foolish

If you are not a car enthusiats and if you know nothing about cars then don't be surprised when people who are both of these things are not too impressed by your sweeping statements.

You may as well go to the Photography forum and say Leica, Canon and Nikon cameras are all crap for various unclear reasons.

I wonder do you like them with go-faster stripes, or without?

So you make sweeping generalizations about car makes, then make more about hot hatches from these manufacturers. Is the 205gti or the honda integra Type R, both thrilling FWD cars of their generation, worse because they have a body kit? Just because a car has "go faster stripes" you clearly declare it is no good. Judging every car by the badge on the bonnet is stupid. You can make sweeping generalisations, but they are incorrect at best. BMW make fine cars and I have enjoyed driving several. On the other hand, i drove an E36 316 and this was far from the ultimate driving machine! A spin in an M3 will convince you BMW can make great cars. As for opel, VXR astras, Corsas etc are the name of the game today. Back in the 90's they had the red-top astras, coming with one of the most bullet proof N/a engines of the decade.

So, if you come to the motors forum and make stupid uneducated generalizations then expect some backlash. Back up your points with evidence at least. I can safety say you probably never drove an escort cosworth or an M3.
