Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hello there, trying to organise a few of us for Hawaii next summer. Has anyone been here on a J1 before? Anyone know of the story with availability of jobs/accommodation?

    I've heard varying reports from it being perfect, to hard to find jobs, to being expensive, bit too quiet, perfect (!)...can anyone shed some light?

    There'd be 4/5 of us going max.

    Cheers.

    I went to Maui on J1 a while back.
    Cons;
    Expensive Accommodation
    Expensive Food
    Very Difficult to get jobs
    Very quiet nightlife

    Pros;
    Perfect Weather
    Amazing Beaches & Scenery
    Very quiet & relaxed

    You'll love it but most people will struggle to break even.

    i was in Maui 2 summers ago, absolutely loved it! very expensive though. i would agree with what kifi says. although there are jobs there if you want it, i just didnt want to work in a cold stone or somewhere like that. ended up working in hard rock.

    came back about 7k in debt but it was my last whole summer off so i was a bit extravagant and I only earned about 1k coz i didn't want t work much! you could probably do it for half what i spent and earn more a lot money if you want. iirc some of the girls with us saved a few grand by the end of the summer.

    How quiet is the nightlife? Is it possible to go out clubbing / to decent sized house parties pretty much every night of the week or is it too quiet for that? The relative quietness of Hawaii is the only thing putting me off pushing for it for our J1 this year, it may be too sober in comparison to some of the other locations..

    HA! too sober!! in Lahaina in Maui there really is only a 2/3 places to go out, clubs arent great (i think there is only 1) it was mainly house parties and beach parties every night. also there was a few GREAT camping trips and a good weekend in Oahu (only 50 euro return) also you can get a boat over to the other islands and have a session over there.
    i think we were boozing 65 nights in a row or something!!

    in Maui you WILL need someone with a full licence and be willing to rent a car. we probably spent 6/7 grand on cars over the summer between the 12 of us. you can rent a jeep wrangler for a $5 a day somewhere (we couldn't find where) over the 3 months but that is your best bet.

    Oh and I got one hangover in the whole summer, it's too hot. used to go to be about 3/4am and be pi$$ed. I would then wake at 8 feeling fresh as a daisy!

    Finally for the first 2 weeks, until we acclimatised, we were having 2/3 showers a day its so hot!

    it was the much better than my J1 to San Fran where i stayed in a Frat House....

    Are the beach parties decent sized? I spent last summer in San Diego and they were usually good craic there, up to about 100 people at firepit sessions on good nights. The cops were a bit of a problem tho, used to chase a lot of people off the beach every so often.

    Like every other typical J1 destination, I've heard really good and really bad things about Hawaii. One was that it's a hassle not being on the mainland because you could make a weekend trip to somewhere cool like Vegas or something but it wouldn't be possible being in Hawaii. Considering traveling for the last few weeks anyway but...is there enough in Hawaii to keep you interested for almost three months? And what's the situation with the amount of Irish there (don't really want to go all the way to the other side of the world and only socialize with Irish...yawn).

    ;)
