Can tax be claimed on prescription drug payments . The first €85.00 has to be paid to the chemist but can tax be claimed on this amount .
    Tks

AFAIK you can claim tax back for prescriptions which cost less than €85. Anything over €85 must be claimed through the Drugs Payment Scheme.

You just need to fill out a Med 1 Form and send it into Revenue. They have changed things slightly this year, if you were claiming in 2006 there was an excess of €125 for a single person and €250 for a married couple. Revenue have scrapped that this year so now you can claim on the whole amount spent on medical treatments such as doctors fees and prescriptions. You can claim back at your rate of tax. So for example if you spent €1000 on doctors and prescriptions this year and you pay tax at 20% then you are able to claim back €200 of this or €410 if you pay at 41%

You don't need to send in the receipts with the claim, though it's advisable to hang onto them if ever Revenue were to do an audit.

    Hope that helps.
