I was going in one night for something to eat, parked down by the castle and as i walked past the back door that was wide open into the kitchen i could see on the ground 3 trays of rice on the ground, worse part about it was the fact that the large wheelie bin was outside the door and was open along with the kitchen door.

Now i dont mind the door been open but should there not bet a net or screen on this door like the chinese opposite have on there kitchen door?

Brooks in in the Dinn Ri complex....

Lotpd why dont u like wp thai anymore? Dont b shy!
Where is brooks? And what sort of food does the 1 in clonegal do?
Used to love the canton rm but as far as i know its closed? Go to the jasmine now but dnt like it as much.

Piccolo Italia seems to be affected by the downturn. Its for sale.

Always thought the food was quite ok & prices quite good! - Maybe Milano will move in seeing as they are expanding??!!!

went to Lautrecs last night with my hubby for an early valentine's dinner.

it is one of the best restaurants around in carlow, the early bird menu is such good value. 4 course meal for the two of us for fifty eight euro (he had steak), neither one of us drinks.

    I'm lovin' in:D:D

    Lautrecs??

The name sounds familiar but I can't for the life of me think where it is?

im not a big fan of the place i must admit, the twice i was there the food wasn't great, and the menu choice poor

    Ah yeah, Thanks!
I could only eat there if I got a table upstairs. I'd hate to be eating right beside a window with loads of people walking by.

hi frosty, depends what typr of food your all looking for, i would recommend the italian connection, or the grill and grape as both are well capable of holding 10 people, and you should get a table for ten still in both places.

ive been in both in the last 2 weeks and can't say a bad word about either

thanks Patrickc. i honestly dont think anyone is particularly fussy considering its pretty late booking. i know in Dublin you wouldnt get a spot this late for 10 people! i just dont want a restaurant thats all couples and lovey dovey and candle light etc cause thats not really the type of night we are looking for - nice as it is when ur with someone special but not for a group of 10 on a good night out! do you think those restuarants would fall into this bracket? i'll give them a buzz tomorrow if you do !! ur a gem, thanks!

personally then i'd try grill and grape so, the italian connection can be very crowded , in that the tables are close together, you could also try the restaraunt in the talbot hotel, think it's called the roof top, have eaten there twice before and it's nice (perhaps a little pricey though) cant guarantee you'll get a table in any but worth a try, and for a group that'd be my recommendations.

most are candle lit though you wont escape that :pac:

Dont know if I can say this or not but I have had numerous bad meals in Shapla. The chef has changed so many times they dont know whether they are coming or going. <snip> Never going there again.
To be honest I havent come across a decent Indian in ireland.
The last proper Indian I had was in Wales.
I think the Indian food suppliers would want to look at their food big time.

my definite recommendation is grill and grape, very tastey and not too expensive, all considerations taken into account. great for lunch!

  • Registered Users Posts: 299 ✭✭wicklori

Big fan of Grill and Grape!!! Had such nice food there-excellent service the lot!
Italian Connection will never get another penny from me or anyone I can influence! Had mouldy cheese on my pizza and was pretty much ignoed when I complained! Was with a group so to save a scene it was paid for!!!!!:mad:
    NEVER again...

The gorumet restaurant in The Lord Bagenal has since closed. Its a shame because the food there was exceptional and easily out done all other restaurants in Carlow.

Of the remaining restaurants, I would probably rank Lautrecs as the nicest. But a very close and hugely underestimated second would be Reddys.

Went to the Grape & Grill last yr for my birthday,
service was brutal, the floor was deadly dangerous, and you pay over the odds for steak. Swore I would never go back, BUT.... decided to give it a second go last week, with another couple arrived in the waitress proceeded to bring us to a tiny table, (4 people) even though the place was half empty,

waitress was so dosey,we asked for drinks/cocktails tat were adverstised on the board (as there is a full bar?) she came back down to say they had no bar man so it would have to be bottles or wine.

waiting awhile again to order food, steaks came out, and waitress came back and apologied that they forgot my order, needless to say it was annoying having to wait for it to cook & also eat mine when everyone had finished.

Also just to let u know that there is no chicken as a main on the menu, you have to order chips or potatoes as an extra, all that comes with ur main is coldslaw?? WTF

Oh we were still waiting on the wine to arrive. only item that came out fast was the over priced bill, which is still sticking in my gut!

Don't mind at all paying for a decent meal but the Grill & Grape is a rip off!!

It baffles me how this place is staying open. Will never ever go back again.

God from the previous reviews I would have gone, but going by that think I'll take it off my list. I wonder are many places starting to skip on the proper service to 'save' (cut corners to keep profit up) on costs

I mainly use Pearls when having an Indian meal whether it be takeout or restaurant. I used Shapla in the past but just preferred Pearls for some reason.
Last week someone told me they had a dish in Shapla which was nicer than the same one in Pearls. Going on this I said I'd give it a try as it was so long since I'd eating there.

I rang up for a takeaway.

    Ring ring...
    Waiter: Yeah
Tombull82: Hi, I'd like to order a takeaway for collection please.
    Waiter: Yeah
Collective Long pause (I thought he had gone for a pen or something)
Waiter: So what do you want?? (Abruptly)
I was about to hang up but said feck it I'll order anyway.
    Tombull82: Pompa dom's etc
    Waiter: OK
Tombull82: how long will that be?
Waiter: Beeeeeeeep. He had hung up.

I went to collect the food and give this fella an ear full.
I was met by another waiter,
Waiter 2:Oh hello sir how are you today?
    Tombull82: I'm fine thanks.
Waiter 2: Would you like a seat of are you collecting an order?
    Tombull82: Collecting and order.
Waiter 2: would you like a drink of anything?
    Tombull82: No thanks I'm fine.
This fella was been totally fine so I said I'd leave him off on my scolding.
I paid for my order and commented how the place was quite.
He said it was due to the recession and I corrected him by telling him it was due to the telephone manner of some of their staff.
He just looked at me blankly as I was walking out.

Sha-Roe in Clonegal. Without doubt the finest restaurant in the South East. As some viewers on Carlow Boards know I travel a lot(A hell of a lot) for work, this restaurant ranks with the top 10% I've ever been to.

The scallops and veal would be my recommendations. My boss came over this last weekend from Atlanta and agreed that this restaurant would not be out of place in New York,London or Paris.

Obviously not for everyday, but honestly last Saturday was my fourth time to visit and it gets better everytime.

I was in Sha-Roe a few weeks ago, and I love that place. Every course was perfection. Best restaurant in the area by far, no contest.
