Brian Cowan put 30c on a pack of 20, and a pro rata equivalent on all other tobacco.

Could have been worse I suppose.

Shur isn't snuff made out of tobacco ?

Actually I thought it would be more than 30c.

I was wondering today does it make any difference - mine will now be €7.45 a pack...they might as well be 7.50 or 7.60 as the 8th euro is well 'broken'

    yea, it's powdered tobacco

You can pick up a tin for about €1.20. As far as I know, it escapes the tax based on the definitions in the law, as it is a smokeless tobacco. The other forms of smokeless tobacco (i.e. the oral forms, dip and snus) unfortunately are illegal here under some EU directive

a hike is always bad but i was expecting a much higher increase, more like 50c - €1

0.30c doesn't amount to much for an individual but I guess it will all stack up to help balance the books!

I'm getting really f**king sick of this to be honest. Do they have to screw me over every single budget? Just one year when they say "The price is OK for this year" and leave it alone every 2 years is enough for a price hike. The old €6 cigs are now €6.80 that's a big leap. Soon you will pay €10 a pack, I reckon in the next 2/3 years.

It's a good point you make. €10 a pack is probably the reality in a few years but presuming earnings go up as well (hopefully) I should be able to cope with that. It's either that, or I'd have to give up, which I'd rather not do

They did leave the price alone about a year or two ago as far as I recall?

    Still shocking though.

The bit that pisses me off are cigars. It's not an addiction thing, and it's not as dangerous but they're still being ****ed. I'm never going to get to my destined status of fine brandy drinker and cigar smoker.

The price of cigarettes in this country is an absolute joke. What is even more of a joke is the governments pretentious attitude that the hikes are for our own good.

But what can we do about it? I know many of us can get them from abroad, but there's still loads of smokers who've to buy their supplies here, which is adding to the governments fcking pockets even further. If it were possible, I'd love to see the boycotting of tobacco products here by the smoking population, it would be absolutely beautiful to see the massive amounts of tax revenue disappear and the goverment panicking over where they're going to find the money, then taking it out on everyone inclusive of the non-smokers.

Sadly, given that it is an addiction I can't see it ever happening though.

Speaking of overseas, is there anywhere to get cheap smokes on the net that doesn't attract the evil eye of customs?

Would be great if there was a mass boycott. I can only image the mayhem that would ensue with 1 million+ addicts unable to get a nicotine fix. If my mood is anything to go by when I need a smoke, well lets just say there'd be a lot of severly narky people about !
