A friend of mine who has a great problem reading and typing,(this is not due to eyesight) on PC is interested in getting some software to do the same.

Though maybe somebody here migh be able to recommend some, or a site that might compare the available products, their abilites, talents and value for money.

I found "Dragon Naturally Speaking" and heard it recommended but this is more for the industrial production of text documnts and does not read the screen. A programe that would read selected text on a web page would be good.

    thanks

There is a program my aunt uses (visually impaired) called Jaws. It is quite expensive and getting a second hand mac laptop may work out cheaper. My mac laptop reads web pages if I set it too, and has good clear speech and also has voice recognition (call out 'open web browser' and hey presto). S'/he cannot apply for any type of grant either, as s/he is not visually impaired. JAWS is a good program though and I would highly recommend it.

    Some info about JAWS- http://www.freedomscientific.com/fs_products/JAWS_HQ.asp

thans for the answer and the in info

but that price "JAWS Standard $895.00" is too much, I'd say less than €80 would be the max that my friend would pay.
    thanks

Some other products listed at http://www.assistireland.ie/index.asp?locID=1953&docID=-1 though the costs are not trivial.

If your buddy needs the software for work, he should be able to get his employer to shell out. FAS will often cover such costs for employers.
