Bulgar Recipes

    Well I bought a packet of this a couple of weeks ago in the supermarket and am a bit uncertain how to use it properly.

    Can it be used instead of rice, how to cook it correctly?

    I'm a bit like this, I see something I haven't tried before, buy it and then go...right so..erm....

    Anyone have a recipe they can recommend that uses it, or just suggestions of how to cook it and what it can go with..

    I'm a total "Bulgar" newbie!

    If you got the Lifeforce one it takes about five minutes in boiling water. think it says it on the side of the packet. i use it with curries, it's got a nice nutty taste that goes well. One I saw Rick Stein (I think) do recently was bulgar with a tomato sauce and prawns. Sounded good.

    Yes its a Lifeforce one too.

    Is it suitable for most rice dishes would you say ? - I'm thinking of trying it with a Chile Con Carne instead of Basmati rice.
    Alternatively I was was thinking of making a lamb korma with it, again instead of the rice.

    Would that work do you think?

    Bulgar is used to make Tabouleh - served with grilled meat or fish. There are many variations of the recipe but it is essentially a salad dish of finely diced veggies - tomato, cucumber, herbs and the bulgar. It can be dressed with oil & vinegar - whatever salad dressing takes your fancy.

    I have seen it made with the bulgar being the main ingredient, and also with the bulgar being a small part of the salad.

    measure 2 glasses (small ones) of Bulgar
    wash it in a sieve

    chop onion and fry in corn oil.
    add a tin of chopped tomatoes.

    stir in washed bulgar

    measure in 3 glasses of water,

    add one beef stock cube

    cover, bring to the boil and then turn down to the lowest heat for 25 minutes.

    give it a stir and let it rest.

    enjoy
