It's amazing how talent and fame rarely have anything to do with each other.

Compare Dragonforce's Betcha Can't Play This video to Chris Broderick's:

His skill is clearly ten-fold that of both of the Dragonforce guys, but a load of people would probably scratch their heads and say "Who's Chris Broderick?"

They should rename the videos "Betcha Dragonforce Can't Play This!" :D

Am I the only one that thinks this all sounds crap?

    All speed and no feeling.

Dragonforce may be sloppy but its the element of fun and cheesiness in their music, as well as they're songs which appeal to me over and above how well they can sweep pick/tap live, technical ability can be important but its definitely not the absolute measure of talent. Btw, is Herman playing the A 7th arpeggio from Nights into Dreams (sega game) because it sounds like something out of a sega game.

it's just a two octave A Major 7 arpeggio. nothing special about it...

it's more the **** tone that makes it sound like it's from a Sega game.

To be fair, it's called "Betcha Can't Play This" so you're criticising a turnip for not being a carrot. ;)

If you want some feeling though, I'd say Chris Broderick still has Dragonforce well beat:

Probably is too, they get a lot inspiration from videogame themes, and a few nicked riffs here and there isn't unlikely.

Well the fact that Broderick is on a whole different level is kinda my point here! :p

It's true though, he can excell in many styles, and his classical pieces are a joy to watch, as well as his stuff with Jag Panzer, or Nevermore. I'd love to hear more Jazz stuff from him though.

Absolutely no knocking Friedman though! I won't hear of it! :D

Not trying to zealously defend Dragonforce but they're definitely better than they let on to be, they're playing quite well in these vids

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,288 ✭✭✭-=al=-

theres an awfull lot that can be done with audio in the studio, but there live **** is never up to scratch, never was

I've seen them live, and to be honest, they're not that bad at all, but there's so many better bands out there.

I've seen them live too, I went for the pure cheesyness. :D

    :D

I've never heard of Chris before (don't know much about metal guitar)
He's a lovely player on classical...reminds of one of south americans...some of the notes weren't clean though but otherwise fantastic..the piece he's playing in the youtube link you posted is only moderately difficult...
If you want to see a real 'betcha you play this' have a look at this piece
only a few people in the world can play it and only one brave man has played it in concert Mr. Alirio Diaz probably the greatest guitarist I've ever seen...even better than awesome Paco de Lucia

Austutias is relatively simple - had to play it for my graduation it is nothing comapred to the Invocation y danza
The opening of asuturias is easy just a sustained tremolo on the open b while you run the bases around it and the chord section is easy except the cmaj one which requires quite a bit more effort..
[When I say it's easy I do mean in terms of a concert piece]
Rodrigo harmonies are incredibly complex...everyone plays austurias in concert!
noone play the invocation as it is the music is far far more sophiscated and tricky (some [bream] have had it's next to impossible to execute well in concert!!)...
the tremolo passages in I y Danza are incredibly difficult, the rasguedos are really hard to execute cleanly, the danza section itslef is tricky but the artificial harmonics with those overlaying bass notes, slightly out of time...they're a real ********...it's an amazingly difficult piece probably the most difficult one ever written for guitar
By the way John Willimas is a horribly robotic player, his interpretations are dull and unimaginative...Bream s version of Austurias is much better...John Willimas started as a child 10-11 playing concert piecies, he was a real prodigy, Segovia said he was the prince of the guitar with a faultless techinique but he is always been criticised for his uninspiring (if technically perfect) playing.

In kind of the same vein as the dragonforce vids except with a melody and some feeling put into it, personally I think this if far more impressive than the look how fast i can pick, metal stuff. and on acoustic too.
