Shock closes the year with a night we can't really pack any more into...

Confirmed so far are ex-Siman & Wiseguys The Black Ghosts featuring DJ Touche, Dub Disco piracy from Padded Cell (DJ Set) Live electro-acoustics from Dry County. The return of Berlin exile Mano Le Tough. Steve Reynolds unearths some more post-punk gems and. Mark Allton does some crate digging to play some rare disco and (real!) electro. Gareth Averill provides some post-rock soundscapes and visuals early in the evening. Aer-Tel makes his second Shock visit to play a live set (subtitles on page 888) with support from fellow HangTougher Lil' Dave and Clare Doherty (aka Lord Byron's Pistol Club) brings some electro-pop-indie fun from the likes of The Decemberists, Jamie T & Robyn.

PADDED CELL (DC Recordings/Neil DJ Set)
    http://www.myspace.com/paddedcelldc

These guys have been one of our favourite acts since we came across the 12" of Picadilly Line Strut released on Eskimo's Suicide Recordings sub-label.
Richard Sen, formerly of the Bronx Dogs and ex-pat Neil Higgins formerly of the Dirty Beatniks combine to make Padded Cell. With a sound that draws from sources as diverse as Goblin, The Velvet Underground, Arthur Russell, Prince, Carl Craig and J Saul Kane. Analogue fetishism and creeping psychosis are key themes, as is a need to create something that is both honest and unique. It is their intent to fashion a sound that is soulful and emotional, yet also dark and narcotic; something that can be understood simultaneously by the head and the heart, getting under the skin in different ways. Rather than seeking to fit into a pre-existing niche, its about creating an idiosyncratic sound that is peculiar to their respective personalities and reflective of their combined experience.

A shared history as club deejays and producers means that even the most mind bending elements of their sound are conducted through dance floor focused channels; disco breaks and rolling percussion combining with menacing synth work outs, electro sensibilities and live instrumentation to create an unholy brew that has been described variously as ‘dark-disco’, ‘goth-disco-rock’, and perhaps most tellingly of all, ‘devils-disco’.

Neil Higgins will represent the duo this time round, making his second visit to Shock and as they're currently putting the finishing touches to their debut album Neil will have lots of new material to preview on the night. Look out for an exclusive Padded Cell live set in the next Shock Podcast episode.

    AerTel-1.jpg

    AER TEL (Live)

Aertel began life in the mid 1980s as a teletext-style service designed to operate in the gaps between RTE television programmes. His first broadcast, a two-colour pixellated image of the Pope kissing the ground, was so so successful that within a month he had expanded to include sections on both The Easter Rising and Breakdancing.

Now, in 2007, Aertel is vast resource of information relating to weather, soaps and the winning of trips to Spain. Relatively new to music, Aertel began recording his first pieces at the turn of this Century to frenzied, yet respectful, acclaim. This will be only his third live performance of many of his works, his first coming at our UltraShock night. This show will not interrupt any scheduled transmissions. Subtitles on page 888

    DryCounty.jpg

    DRY COUNTY (Live)
    http://www.myspace.com/drycounty05

Dry County released their debut album 'Unexpected Falls' earlier this year. After recording the best part of an album, the band jettisoned most of the material due to a rapid progression in their sound and dynamic, May 2007 saw the album reaching the light of day and sounding like the record the band always knew they were meant to release.

'Unexpected Falls' crossbreeds a love of songs and a passion for electronic music, the natural and the mechanical combined. The fabric of the album is constructed from guitars, Nord Lead 2, Microkorg, Piano, Auto Harp, Mellotron, live drums (some built from buckets and boxes), The lead single 'Attention' has a chorus featuring twelve of the band's closest disciples. Both the single and album were recorded in a number of locations according to the required sounds and appropriate atmosphere and were mastered by Guy at the Exchange. The bands' influences range from Nine Inch Nails to Boards of Canada or on the guitar side, Ride to Deus, with an inherent drive to create a sound that is far more than imitation or tribute. The album title refers to the setbacks and accidents of living life and of making music. The songs and their lyrics look both up and down; a streak of melancholy runs through what is ultimately a celebration of life and of sound.

The band have previously supported God Is An Astronaut, Whipping Boy, Jape, Messiah J & The Expert, James Yorkston and Jimmy Edgar. They have also featured at events and festivals such as Hard Working Class Heroes, Bud Rising and Electric Picnic,.

Their music is currently receiving radio support from Donal Dineen, Dan Hegarty, Donna Legg, Leagues O'Toole and Cian O'Ciobhain.

    MANO LE TOUGH (DJ Set)
    http://www.myspace.com/manoletough

Another ex-pat currently doing very well in his new home of Berlin is Mano, aka Mano Le Tough. Since Mano has left Dublin he's been building up a studio in Berlin. The initial fruits of this effort have already been signed up by Prins Thomas to his new label Internasjonal, Who'd have thought someone with such a silly name could do so well?

Check out some of Mano Le Tough's productions on his myspace site.

The guys have contributed a live set for episode 8 of the Shock Podcast. The set is littered with Vincent Price samples. There's something about Vincent Price's voice and Hammer horror ethos in general that somehow seem to some up the Padded Cell sound.

They're currently putting the final touches to their debut album which we believe will be released on DC Records

For those in Dublin this week Neil will be DJing for us on Friday 21st of December in Crawdaddy.

    Here's the tracklisting:

    01 Unknown Zone
    02 Signal Failure
    03 TSOP (PC Re-edit)
    04 Theme from Friday 13th
    05 Moon Menace
    06 Konkorde Lafayette
07 My Children Sleep Next to the Echo Chamber

    BlackGhosts.jpg

THE BLACK GHOSTS FEATURING DJ TOUCHE
    http://www.theblackghosts.co.uk

A special DJ / Vocal / Fx set from The Black Ghosts who are joined this Friday by The Wiseguys's DJ Touche who will provide the beats.

The Black Ghosts are comprised of Simian's Simon Lord (who's vocal's almost everyone will be familiar with from the Justice V Simian track 'Never Be Alone) and Theo Keating formerly of The Wiseguys who made their name in the mid-nineties big beat explosion.

Theo was forced by his parents to watch Hammer Horror films at a very early age – because they were directed by his godfather. Alan he Satanic Rites of Dracula. He also made Dracula AD1972, where vampirism meets psychedelia, perhaps this explains the strange sonic world in which The Black Ghosts have created for themselves.

Meanwhile Simon's first introduction to music came from his grandfather, who was part of the London Symphony Orchestra's woodwind section. "He played the oboe on the Star Wars theme" says Simon, "which meant absolutely nothing at the time, and on various Beatles tracks, including A Day in the Life, which he also just wrote off as 'some rock thing'."
Simon's father had a more progressive attitude to sound. "He built his own synthesizers, and they weren't just for making music," he explains. "His 'Bio Activity Translator' was a device that clipped onto the stems of plants, then translated their electric fields into an analogue hum. He also made a 'Dream Machine' for my sister and I. It generated a gentle white noise that helped us drift off to sleep."
