Which car from Japan?

There is a very strong chance that I will be taking a job as a sales rep in the new year. I haven't done this kind of work before and I'm not sure what I'm likely to think of it.

This may tie in with another idea I've been working on of importing a car from Japan. ie, get a sensible, probably diesel saloon car costing less than €10k and either a) claim my generous mileage or b) buy it, use it for work for a bit, conclude repping isn't for me and sell it, maybe with a margin attached.

Whether I take the job or not, I was thinking about importing a car and as much as I'd like a hot Jap car, I want to avoid being lumbered with a Subaru or something that i may never shift if I need to. In other words, I want something easily shifted to Joe Soap if the job doesn't work out.

    Is my logic flawed?

    If not, any sugestions?

Well diesels are not too popular in Japan so you might have some trouble alright.

I had a diesel Avensis in mind but they don't seem to exist (more than we can say about over here:D).

What about an estate. I'd love another but I think they may be trickier to shift if i had to??

Avensis was only sold in Japan from 2003/2004, same model as sold in Europe, it was the same one built in the UK and exported back to Japan, not sure if there was enough demand for the diesel though.

Mazda 6 might be a good choice, available in diesel and estate over there. They might have called it something else though for the JDM.

They did indeed. It was called the Atenza(as is the new one).

As other posteers said, Japan has no interest in diesel, so I think it would be very hard to find a JDM diesel(not that I could figure out why you would want a JDM car over an Irish car anyway).

in my experience JDM cars are better equipped, better serviced and cheaper i dont know if i will ever buy a car in ireland again unless its something very specialised.

You know that the homologation that goes into localising cars for the European market results oin a higher quality car yeah? I don't think anyone should buy cars that are not localised for the market, I even think that they are dangerous in some instances and shouldn't be allowed so I would never buy one ex import but maybe that's just me...

The Avensis is still for sale over there as an estate or a saloon. There is no hatchback available there. They are exactly the same model as over here except for Qi/Xi/Li badging and an Avensis grille element which is not a Toyota badge. There is also 4 wheel drive available on the 2.0 litre models.

They really like a speccy atenza in Japan and they look great but as far as i can see, I'd save about 2 or 3 grand by buying a top spec Irish Mazda 6.

    Any other ideas?

I had figured the vrt and tax rates would put an end to people importing second-hand cars from Japan?

Would an Accord Euro R be hard to shift? There's a handful on Carzone and they seem to be available direct from Japan at a lot more reasonable price than the dealers. Wouldn't mind one of those for a while if I could move it on reasonably quickly if need be.

Interesting to note that it almost identical to the Euro spec Avensis bar the speedo which is calibrated to 180 km/h rather than 240 as it would be here.
