First year is quite easy. You do a wide range of business modules dealing with the basics in Economics, Accounting, Finance and IT.

Second year is quite difficult. It has a very heavy workload (if you want to do well that is) and you don't get a choice of subjects until 3rd year and thats when you decide whether to specialise in Finance or Accounting. It's about 19 hours of lectures/tutorials a week and my timetable is certainly very unfriendly to the student, some cases you can have 5 hours of lectures in a row, no break or up to 7 hours of lectures in one day. You're knackered when you get home and you're expected to do loads of self-learning at home.

The course gives you maximum exemptions for Accounting, if that's what you want to do so it's worth putting this course high on your CAO form if it's what you're looking for.

However it's not the only course that gives you maximum exemptions. There is virtually no choices in this courses until you get to your final year. So it's like the junior cert - half of your modules you won't want to do. They just brought that in this year and it came down on me like a tonne of bricks because I was hoping to focus on accounting from as early as possible - it's the only reason I chose this course. I had the points to do Commerce in UCD, and chosing not to is the biggest regret of my life right now.

My advice to you is to shop around with Commerce UCD, BESS Trinity, A&F DIT, A&F DCU and choose which ever course you feel suits you best.
