The historical reason behind actors' fear of Macbeth is because it was a very popular play back in the time of wandering acting troupes.

So if the troupe was having a bad week and not getting enough takings then they would resort to putting on Macbeth as it was guaranteed to bring in some cash to pay the actors.

Therefore whenever actors heard that the play Macbeth was going to be put on they knew that the week's takings hadn't been good and that they might not get full pay this week.

So the term Macbeth never boded well and as time passed this got replaced by the superstition that it was unlucky to say.

Say it here, start a thread. I don't really care.
I already explained my position and reason for the ban via PM.

    Hi Orla,

Thanks for the coverage the other day, (if you're the same Orla Barry of course ;) )

Nice to get a bit of PR now and then, especially from a Cork woman.

Really? I never knew that, and I would like my Shakespeare when I'm in the mood. Sounds believable, though ... actors are a fairly superstitious lot at the best of times.

Note the part of my post in brackets, toots. It's called a disclaimer.

You sign up within an asses roar of this site being publicised on a national radio show, sharing the name of that shows host, who had previously discussed her time on boards.

It's a reasonable assumption, and one I qualified in my post.

I don't PM people unsolicited either.

wait did he really ban him just for saying macbeth or was there more to it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,376 ✭✭✭metrovelvet

Unless it was the theatre forum he should not have been banned for that. That is like applying your own religious ideology in a forum that has nothing to do with the religion.

The mod should at least as ask him to say
'ministers of angels on earth defend us " or whatever it is, I cant remember exactly, three times and have the ban lifted. That is what other actors do when someone says it, and it's only bad luck to say it near a theatre or during production. It is not bad luck to say it on After Hours.

... double bubble toil and trouble
