Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Spanish Literature Award?

Does anybody here follow current Spanish literature reviews/awards? I'm looking to buy a Spanish book as a gift for a friend. She loves books in general, but is really passionate about Spanish too (shes fluent). She will probably have read the entire Booker short list at this stage, so I don't want to get her a translation. What is the equivalent award in Spain? Can anyone give their opinion on the current winner, or can someone recommend a book off the shortlist?

Any help would be really appreciated!

I suppose the equivalent would be the Premio Nadal. My knowledge of Spanish literature is very poor :o, but one book I'd definitely recommend is 'Nada' by Carmen LaForet. It won the inaugural Premio Nadal in 1944. She might have read it before though. Here's a review of the book anyway.

Another book that's worth a read is 'El porqué de las cosas' by Quim Monzó, translated from the original in Catalan 'El perquè de tot plegat'. It's far from an epic but has received quite a bit of critical acclaim.

Not sure hpw much that helps but at least it's something to go on. :)

I really enjoyed reading Los Hijos de La Tierra. Can't remember the name of the collection in english now, but since you are looking for a book in spanish I guess it doesn't really matter lol

Here's a list of the winners since 1944. I haven't read any of them but Calderón, Delibes and Soto are writers I enjoyed reading. Marías is also supposed to be good.
You could look at Camilo José Cela, especially La Colmena. And then there's Garcia Marquez and the wonderful Isabel Allende(much better in Spanish).
