My favourites at the moment would have to be Stewart Lee, Bill Burr and Doug Stanhope

I couldn't agree more with you about Bill Burr. I was lucky enough to win tickets to see him in the Sugar Club last year. Went along not really expecting much (as admittedly I'd never heard of him) but he really blew me away. He was such a funny and intelligent comic! Will definitely see him again. Reminds me now to get his DVD! Thanks mrblondecutsear!

I quite like Gabriel Iglesias, this is one of the funniest routines I've seen in ages:

you wouldnt think a fat, squeaky voiced Mexican could do a note perfect impression of a black woman, but you'd be wrong :D

Absolutely love the podcasts I've been listening to them weekly for about a year and I still laugh when he says "oh jesus" in that voice

    Favourites at the moment are:

Stewart Lee - he's all over TV at the moment (DAVE, BBC). So much more than a comedian: a poet, artist, charismatic actor, and a bone fide genius.

Billy Connolly - as above, but minus the intellectual cred.

Dylan Moran - poetic, like Lee, and Ireland's finest comedian since Dave Allen.

Rich Hall - America's bull**** detector. Always hilarious and probably Hicks' successor.

Bill Hicks - would've have been my number one about ten years ago, but kinda bored with all that stuff now. Still a genius though, and still very relevant today.

Loads of others, whose names I can't recall.

Atm my faves would be Louis CK and Jim Jeffries.

Up and coming, I think Kevin Bridges is ridiculously talented and only 23!

I think Tim Vine is great

I think the problem with this issue is that people are mistaking their favourite comedian with the best comedian. It's like in music, where you might have a favourite band, but they mightn't be the best musicians.

For example, I'm not a big fan of Billy Connolly or Chris Rock, but they're expert comedians and it's clear they've honed their craft over x amount of years and are better than a lot of comedians I really like. I would say Stuart Lee is my favourite comedian I've seen but saw Jerry Seinfeld last week and he was far and away the best comedian I've seen. Every joke hit perfectly with regards timing and the material (great as it was) was almost irrelevant. To take a step back, his type of stuff isn't too far from a lot of other comedians out there, but his craft is head and shoulders above the rest.

edit: Love Daniel Kitson too and would say he's up there with the best of them, though have only ever heard a few shows on mp3 as he's never played Ireland, I don't think. Hope to make the trip to see him live at some stage.

I know he's getting old now but I always liked Brendan Grace

Speaking of Jerry Seinfeld above, surely Larry David must be the true King of Comedy.

I'm sure he is/was very good, but there's little or no footage of him around, is there?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,255 ✭✭✭James T Kirk

    I'm sure there must be?

I recall a TV interview with Joan Rivers where she said he'd been writing and doing stand-up for years and years before he got the recognition he deserved, and that she was delighted for him when he finally hit the big time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 532 ✭✭✭Mickolution

He had been doing stand-up, yeah, but he made his name as a writer on Fridays and SNL before co-creating Seinfeld. I remember he was in that Channel 4 "Comedians Comedian" thing a few years back. There was mention of his stand-up, but I can't remember if there was footage. I think all I've seen is from the Curb HBO special, but that was all scripted.

I dunno if there's such thing as a 'best' comedian. People can only speak from personal preference.

Personally, I love Bill Hicks. I noticed a few people on here saying he's overrated, or more of a social commentator than a comedian. I don't think that's true. He's got a lot of very funny sketches that aren't political, like his stuff about smoking, music and drugs. His stuff about politics and religion though are also infused with a lot of humour. He had something to say, and his comedy really makes you think about very serious issues. His comedy is funny, but also searingly honest and he put a lot of himself into it. I've nothing but respect for the guy, and I always go back to his stuff time and again. He's a legend, and it's such a shame he died so young. Unfulfilled promise, he could have been even greater.
Also, in this vein is George Carlin. Quite similar comedians - angry, social commentators who could make you think while making you laugh.

In terms of Ireland, Dylan Moran is great. Very eloquent, and a genuinely witty guy. His onstage persona in itself is quite amusing, not mention some of the just downright bizarre images he conjures up with his material.

I've also got a lot of love for Eddie Izzard, but who doesn't?

Dylan Moran - the first comedian i really split myself laughing at
Dermot Morgan - comic genius, you just know by the head on him that he was the class clown. Apparently he used to have the audiences on Father Ted in stitches in between sketches! I also absolutely love his Fr. Trendy routine
Dave Chappelle - cracks me up. His own voice adds to his humour but his impressions are hilarious too!
Dave Allen - very clever stuff, only recently heard of him.
Stewart Francis - another comedian who had me in fits of laughter!
Larry David - i dont think his stand up was ever brilliant, but purely for his work on Curb (which is pretty much all improv - look it up!) and his interviews (especially this http://www.kennykramer.com/LarryDavidInt.html and this http://www.newyorker.com/humor/2011/07/04/110704sh_shouts_david?currentPage=1 ) he's clearly very witty and intelligent
Dara O Brien - equally as intelligent as quick witted! curses on the poster who pointed out that "aaaahhh" thing he does after some jokes though! kinda annoying now!
Mitch Hedberg - so original, brilliant timing and delivery, brilliantly funny
Bill Burr - very funny and is gonna be big

Honourable mention to Conan O Brien, obviously not a comedian in the strictest terms, but no doubt a very funny guy, love the show

Theres alot of other comedians who i laugh at/with but these guys are my top favourites

I've never found Carlin, Hicks or Stewart Lee "side splitting" funny, which is what i look for in a comedian. They are all very clever and make funny, insightful observations but not exactly Laugh-out-loud for me.

Never really liked Billy Connolly,Robin Williams either, but i despise Dane Cook and Lee Evans

    some of my favourites are
    Dylan Moran
    Jimmy Carr
    Dara O'Brien
    Russell Howard
    Ed Byrne
    Ricky Gervais

emmmmm there's more but i can't think of them at this time

i used to love frankie boyle but he's just rude without being funny at this point in my opinion, never liked Billy Connolly

There's alot of new/fresh/young comeidans i like but they couldn't be considered the ''best comedians ever'' so i'd be going off topic if i mentioed them

I suppose its all very subjective (what isn't) and depends on whether you feel the comedian is speaking to you.

I balk in horror at the likes of Frankie Boyle but apparently many people think he's the funniest thing since sliced bread.

The only way you can get a feel for comedians is sample their live work, either at the gig or on a DVD... forget the panel shows which are intermittently amusing but mostly the wrong vehicle to showcase their talent.

I think you looked up a thesaurus or something and lost the plot. But yeah, Richard Pryor has no equal.

and he's been rehashing the same material for years, its stuff your mam would find funny, its comedy that has a place alright, he just needs new material.

The only reason people couldnt have Mitch Hedberg as one of their favourite comedians is because they may not have heard of him. I simply couldnt believe how funny this guy was.

Even though there isnt much of his material on around, Zach Galifinakis is simply hilarious. I knew from watching The Hangover this guy was genuinely hilarious.

Dylan Moran, his narrations, observations and analysis are consistently hilarious and often close to the bone which makes him quite unique.

Kat Williams, his off the cuff humour and wit is just surreal.

    Chris Rock

    Dave Chappelle

Jimmy Carr will go down as one of the best of his generation.
