was in Game in Dundrum a few times over the Xmas, every day the queues to buy went all around the shop, the queue would block off the PC section which was pretty much deserted, if you fought your way through the crowd you had the whole section to yourself, the vast majority of sales were for console games, thought it was a bit sad that the console buyers had blocked off access to the PC section, a sign of the times

same thing for assassin's creed system update needed and i was going mad like christ i only want to play the game, you can then imagine how angry i got when it said "no, you can't play you need to download assassin's creed patch v1.xx or whatever" it took like 30 minutes to download install and then play.

Yes, thats a pain, but i understand why they did that because, as far as i know, there were problems with the ps3 version of assasisn's Creed, it would crash or freeze (something along those lines) and as a result they had to release a patch. So while that 30 minutes of waiting was a pain, it probably saved u alot of frustation down the line.

Back on topic, Both UT3 and Crysis are great games and deserve to be doing better. UT3 sales will pick up im sure once its released worldwide on the ps3 this month and when it hits the xbox as well.

Crysis, it needs to be released on a console to make some sort of profit. I know alot of people who play pc games and are avoiding crysis because they think they cant run it. I played it on medium/low settings and I loved it, its not all about graphics after all.

But like its been said before, consoles attract more gamers for the obvious reasons. Plus, there have been alot of great games out these last few months, some great ones were going be left behind by gamers.

it's still not the point in case.

i'm by no means an expert on software/games testing, but i do know if i have one universal platform (PS3) i'd make damn sure there'd be no bugs in it. ok bugs will get through as games get more complex etc but to have a patch for a game that's released then there's a patch for it is wrong. it's encouraging lazy programming and testing in games development.

also i don't know about you but the first 30 minutes of the whole "i got a game" phase is crucial to whether i enjoy the game or not, but then when i'm greeted with "please install this patch because we got lazy in the testing phase of development" and to wait half an hour, really put the developers in my bad books.

I'd like to see you go up to the producer of assassins creed and tell her she did a bad job

oh and if you don't know who produced Assassins Creed *cough* Jade Raymond *cough*

If you had switched off your Internet router and restarted the PS3 would it have let you play then? Obviously if there's not internet connection it can't do a test to see if there's a new version, then letting you play the game using the original version from disc.

It's not lazy at all. It's called working to a deadline. I guarantee the developers were doing 60+ hours per week towards the end to get the best game they possibly could out the door in time for release.

Then, after its released and the copies are selling anyway, they continue to work on it and bring out patches to make the product the best it can be.

If you have a problem its with publishers forcing deadlines, but even that is inevitable because if the game comes out after Christmas it won't sell as well and there'll be no money to fund the next game. It's just a fact that extremely complex software (and no software is more complex than a cutting edge computer game) will never be perfect for all users.

I bet the patch in question fixed some very minor issues that you'd never have noticed anyway, but some users do notice so they keep fixing them.

Well (off the top of my head again, I'm just recalling what a read some time back :) ) the problem wasn't the developers fault. What happened I believe was that Sony released a new update for the console as they usually do every 6 weeks or so. However this update caused assassin's creed not to function correctly, therefore Sony had to release another update to correct the problem, therefore if it was anybody's fault it was Sony's.

And as steviec said, its not lazy from the developers point of view. The so called "crunch" period in the development process of a game is caused by deadlines set by the publishers. Therefore bugs are bound to get through (or the game itself will be kinda crap/average :) which I thought assasin's creed was). After all, not all publishers are gonna delay one of there biggest games of the year like Take 2/Rockstar.

I'd have no problem telling her that.

Her Bewbs mean nothing to me when i play her average, overhyped game.

right, i fully understand why developers have to work to deadlines and from re-reading my post there was nowhere where i said that any developer in particular was lazy, what i'm saying is that the option of patching will encourage laziness in developers and they will skip vital testing (or worse even coding) just so the box is on the shelves and basically if the game is buggy due to lack of testing it's bad on a console player who doesn't have an internet connection, they're basically stuck with a buggy piece of ****.

maybe assassins creed wasn't the best example to pick and perhaps there hasn't been a game out yet that's needed patching real bad out of the box but i'm trying just to get across the point that if the avenue of patching is available to developers they'll will cut corners to keep their publishers happy.

i know i've gone totally off the main topic here, but just think i need to give my 2 cents worth.

I reall'y dont understand these threads.

I'm very much a pc gamer but i have both a wii and ps3. Why? Cos i enjoy them, they have a different feel to pc gaming and as has been said are more easily a social platform. I'm by no means saying that a PC is not a social platform, i mean as has been stated earlier MMORPG's allow millions of people to play together but its not quite the same as being able to laugh at someone in person after you whip em at something.

PC lan's take more planning than having a couple mates around for a few games of pro evo (or insert game here). I mean you can be having a few cans in the house befre you go into town, why not have a few games then? Most people would have two or more controllers so you don't even need to lug them around. This is what i love about consoles.

All the above said, i am 100% an online pc gamer and have been since 1999 when tib sun was released for the pc. I've been a pc gamer since the mid nineties and would never trade my pc for a console. Like ever.

These discussions really never get us anywhere and i'm embarressed at the fanboy attitude from both sides of this debate. We are all gamers, we need a united front vs the people who would belittle us!* ;)

    *Thankfully their numbers are shrinking

EDIT: regards patching, most (if not all) pc games have an inbuilt patcher which negates the whole pc vs consoles patching. Whether they should need patching at all is another debate but i'd prefer to have the option.

I genuinely do not think consoles are a more social experience...

Take GH3 on PS3 fopr example, you play against some random player, there is no chat, no friends system....

Even sending someone a message on the PS3 network is painful, its like using carrier pigeons again ffs

The PC has a very good game networks such as Xfire and Steam Community.. IRC, msn, in game chat with keyboards or voice etc etc...

And there is a much better community feel to PC gaming, instead of owning some randomner on a console, its much better when you can laugh at the person you just owned :D

I don't think ONLINE gaming is social as a whole. I mean playing someone in a game for 3 mins is not a social experience. Playing a 5v5 ffa ut ctf game is not a social experience. Clans and guilds in MMORPG's are a bit more fuzzy and can possibly be counted as social experiences as long as you do more than just play together (ie discuss things etc).
I was purely talking about people coming around and playing games togeher (be it at a LAN or just a few m8's round for a game or two of knockout kings or PES).
Xfite, Steam communities, unreal.ie, boards.ie, irc, msn are not part of the pc game and are therefore not really part of this discussion
as consolers have access to them as well.

That's my view and i know its a bit of a grey area what people define as social. Talking to random people in a game online is not socialising since half the time your throwing insults at eachother. Unless of course you know them and are winding them up because you kno them.... tbh they need a new word for talking to people on-line :p

Everyone knows the PS3 online system sucks (including Sony and they are updating it soon).
Why not try comparing it to Live which has the equivalents to almost everything you mentioned except IRC.
It has MSN, it has a persistant friends system across games (ala Steam/Xfire), it has MSN, in-game chat with keyboards (not that anyone would be arsed) and voice etc...
I'd also wager that a much higher percentage of people on Live use voice communication than on PC (since you get a free headset with the premium console).
