    Hi,
I'm fairly new to this site, and one thing I've noticed from time to time is that certain words on most threads are often spelt incorrect..
Is it just me or do most other people think that we have become more and more reliable on predictive text and spell check that our spelling has started to suffer. ?

Its just one of those things that I have started to notice..

By the way I didnt use any form of spell check on this thread and its too late to care if there is any word spelt wrong.. But you know what I mean..

    'Spelled' 'Incorrectly'- it's an adverb.
    Reliant
    It's, didn't'.

    Punctuation poor.

First rule when posting a 'grammar post' is get most of itright yourself.

Not being a pedant, just giving you a heads up, as you seem a nice person;)

    'Spelled'

It can be either "spelled" or "spelt".

The only difference is that in the USA, "spelt" isn't accepted as a word. But as we Irish tend to speak British English most of the time, it doesn't matter which one is used. :)

Perfectly correct on the other assessments though.

In this case, it makes no difference which one is used.

'Spelt' Hmm... I would venture to suggest that anybody with even a modicum of pride in their grammatical accuracy would not use that version.

Technically it may be ok,but, like farting in company, it is something I personally would not do.

Tends to nail down your socio economic status,I would opine, much like 'done' and 'seen' instead of did and saw.

That's just me now,I tend to be a bit pernickety about things like that.;)

It is nothing like "done" or "seen" and has got nothing to do with socio economic status. Go and look up Oxford.

I fail to understand your point.

My point is that "done" and "seen" are often used incorrectly and it is wrong for you to compare this to the usage of "spelt"-

I done my homework last night. (WRONG)
I did my homework last night. (CORRECT)

I seen Ben in the pub last weekend. (WRONG)
I saw Ben in the pub last weekend. (CORRECT)

I spelt my name wrongly on the application form. (CORRECT - but not in USA)
I spelled my name wrongly on the apllication form. (CORRECT)

    Infinitive - Spell
    Past Simple - Spelled/Spelt
    Past Participle - Spelled/Spelt

I don't actually see your point in saying that using "spelt" is like "farting in public".

You will note that I said 'I would opine' which means 'In my opinion'.
Personally I would never use 'spelt' irrespective of what the OED says.
    But thats just my opinion

As a matter of interest my spell checker underlines it as misspelled:cool:
Yeah I know the OED doesn't.

No, you're the first person to have noticed it.
    Well done. :D

@FlutterinBantam - where do you stand on the use of spaces after commas?

Is your spell checker a Microsoft product?

I try not to put spaces after commas,if I did it's a typo.

Probably, and it's giving me the American version.

Anyway, right, wrong,or indifferent, you won't find me using 'spelt' in any post/document/love letter/french letter/legal letter ad infinitum.

I just will not use it:p

Why do you try not to put a space after a comma?

Because I never thought it was the correct procedure.

Is it correct to put a space after a comma?

I must admit I never heard of that :o

You should always put a space after a comma.
    Commas - [,]
Commas point out brief pauses in a complex sentence or separate items in long lists. They are useful for breaking up long sentences, but only to show a natural break. You do not put a space before a comma, but you do need a space after one.

I'm doing an editing course so I can't help saying something:

You should have wrote 'reliant' and not 'reliable'.
